Good point.

Like Marx stated in 1843; 'television is the opium of the masses'.

what worries me about global mass media is that it has never been tested

so many things backfire on us, once a generation pass, and man are we seeing some backfires today.
the most horrible and obnoxious kids since the early paleolithic live today.
are we humans MEANT to be aware of other humans hardships? is it good for us, to know and observe it all?

in nature, the only human brains i'd ever see, would be the brains from a horrible accident, or a victim of a war i'd find myself in the middle of. the sight of brains would _always_ be simultaneous w some survival mental trauma.

now i can see brains online.
what does that do with me?

Given the dates, I take it you're talking about Karl Marx whom I doubt has ever heard of television or even radio for that matter.

Sorry.... that was meant sarcastically. He said; 'religion is the opium of the masses' but I gave it a more sign of the times interpretation. I.e. mine and IMO a true one. Of course I know at mentioned date there was no TV. No worries, I hope though.

And in reply to ZEGH8578, I follow where you say it never been tested. I mean look at Jackass and those kids, somewhat older folk, who think that it's funny and imitate things they see on that show. It's moral degradation going really low at times due to this show only. And they think it's so cool.

On the other hand TV teaches us things also. When I put the thing on I do it very selectively. I like nature, science, history (other things) and channels like the Discovery channel, NGC, the BBC, Dutch non commercial channels offer me some good info about these topics also.

I mean I will not throw the thing out of the window but I chose very selectively what I watch. Skip negative shite and choose quality. (try to).

actually, TV viewership is down...it's Facebook that makes you stupid (or maybe, just like a magnet and iron filings, it attracts stupidity...;)

I intervene. YouTube's comment sections attract far more stupidity than any other facet of our civilization.

Right, but I think we can safely conclude that Youtube's comment pages are merely repositories of humanity's stupidity, rather than an actual cause of stupidity in themselves. There are more nefarious devices on the internet which actually do produce stupidity, e.g., twitter.

I saved $120 a month by canceling my cable and Tivo services in November 2008, and have not regretted the decision since. There was LITERALLY nothing on television worth my time or expense. With the extra $120 a month I've been able to do other fulfilling things with my free time... like read and buy cool video games. :)
