That was the underailed remainder of the same train which was still travelling at speed hitting the motive power after the engineer let off the emergency brakes.

That was the back of the train that didn't get hit by the tornado. Inertia was carrying it forward. That flying torpedo was a fuel car. You've seen them. They're usually in the back. The tanks are filled with some sort of liquid. I'm thinking some sort of combustible liquid. That it didn't explode, with all those sparks, is amazing!

That was shot in January, 2008 in Harvard, IL (a bit northwest of Chicago) and the train was bound for Janesville, WI. The tank car was loaded with hydrolic oil intended for a parts supplier to the now-closed GM pickup truck/SUV plant there. Yes, it sprang a leak that required several days to clean up.

Tornadoes don't happen often in January in the upper midwest USA, but it was an unusual warm snap at that time.
