Lateral Thinking Challenge

A rich but wicked man once offered a poor beggar a clay jug containing a liquid that the wicked man said would turn everything it came into contact with into pure gold. Why was the poor, but smart beggar not deceived?

I thought about that too at first, but then I realized the rich man could have covered a real gold pot with a type of clay that dissolves in contact with the water in order to impress the beggar. Maybe the beggar just didn't see it? 8)
