Ear lobes a pretty late evolutionary development. Chimpanzees have no earlobes and so do all the other great apes. It is fairly useless feature from a functional perspective. Like it does nothing to aid our sense of hearing so I feel the useless flap of skin below your ears evolved for the sole purpose to make is more convenient to hang pierce jewellery to enrich their cultures with personal artistic expression such as body painting and tattooing. Many cultures - continents apart - such as American natives to Africans of many cultures adorn the earlobes from large hoopy rings to stretching them with large ear spools. Some people - particularly women in high society- like to ever express their social status by hanging some of the most expensive diamonds which one feels would be better off been locked up in jewellery vaults guarded by armed guards just purely for investment purposes. I am not so extravagant but I feel there is something missing about a naked earlobe. So I just have one of mine pierced and stretched to accommodate an ear spool about 18mm in diameter. It is shiny black and kind of goes with my black specks and I am perfectly happy with it.

I have myself come to the same kind of conclusion about the evolution of earlobes, and am glad to learn my "theory" is not irrelevant after all. Following this idea, could there be morphological alterations due to piercings? For example if more and more people have their bellybutton pierced, could there be a tiny flap of skin hanging from their progeny's belly in thousands of years?

I am personally fond of earrings, especially pendents. I buy one pair each time there is a very special event in my life. And also, they belong to decorative arts, my passion. I am fascinated by their shapes, colours and patterns.

In the old times fishermen (especially the ones on the long term), pirates, privateers and so on, used to pierce one of their ears. It was said that piercing a special point, you could get a better sight.

I think that Chinese and Indian people could agree with that since their special doctors work with meridians

And also, they were living a very dangerous life! Not living the life of everybody else. I suppose it was also a way to stand out when they were to land (plus, for the pirates, an easy way to carry a part of their stolen treasures).

I used to wear earrings too. Earrings and pin jewels are still my favorite.

Indeed, ears are centers for balance, connected to the mouth and the nose, and different asian medical methods deal with them.

I did not remember that sailers used to pierce one of their ears to get a better sight, that is very interesting! But as far as I know, the lobe is the only part of the ear where there is no major nervous knot, isn't it?
On the other hand, cartilage is very sensitive, that is one reason why - at least in France - jewellers are not allowed to pierce them anymore (the other reason is trivial ; not to be concurrential to body piercers..). My sister had told me about a friend of hers who became sterile after getting 8 piercings on each ear, which would prove how much those nervous centers are important, but I do not know if this story is true...

When I go for a chinese massage, sometimes I'v got my ears strongly rubbed, the wholes ears with the palms of the hands. I love it!

I think that ear piercing is rather pointless, but whatever you chose to do with your own body doesn't really concern me.

It's pointless but it's pretty (for those who like it).
It's just that you have to think to take them off when you go for a massage or to the hairdresser.

Sure it's pointless, like any decorative feature. But to me the difference between a pointlessly decorated thing and a raw thing is the same as between living and surviving. Adds some spice up.
But if you take into consideration the fact earrings have always been representative of somebody's social status, they are not so random and pointless. Studying them is a way to try and understand social rules, in my opinion. (Not that I succeed in it, though...)

It can be painful, awful. But it depends. There are people who enjoy it right away.
And some who have to suffer a longer way to really enjoy it

I have piercings, but they healed up putting earrings in was uncomfortable for me, and I was allergic to everything except pure gold.

That being said, I do want an eyebrow piercing.

I used to have a lip ring but had to take it off because the higher I got in my studies, the more I 'looked like a weirdo who cannot grow up', as my director of research kindly told me.
I just found it pretty ^^

I find very funny the fact what used to be worn as a social symbol (lip-pierced people were honourable for the Incas) is now seen as a teenage depravation. I hope this gets to change after even more people get pierced...
