A theory as to why so many of us like web surfing.

I have a theory, or maybe just a projection of my own situation:

Web surfing is pleasurable to Aspies and people on the spectrum because its a logical organization of information that is itself a logical extension of how we tend to think. It allows us to obsess about several things at once; we can have a tab open for a primary interest, another tab for another interest, yet another for something more essential. It allows us to multitask when multitasking is difficult which for many of us is most of the time.

What do you think of this assessment?

Yeah, fair enough. It also eliminates the need for eye contact, allows time to absorb a statement and formulate a reply, you can edit said reply, you can't forget what a person said because it's right there, and it's impossible to be talked over! My take on it.

I think there's a lot of truth in that. I want to have interaction with people sometimes without all the correctness of sitting upright and looking well-behaved and decent. The Web cuts out a lot of stressful data channels which are present in face-to-face interaction. I am a very sociable person and I like company but I also get overload like any other Aspie and then I want to be alone. Or alone with the Internet.

I know one married couple (Aspie husband, ADHD wife) who met on the net. When they are at home and they start fighting and they see it's getting heated, they move off to separate rooms and start sending each other text messages instead. That cuts out a lot of stress because he stops trying to figure out her body language and they get resolved more easily.

Web surfing?

It gives me almost godlike powers.

I can do what our ancestors could only dream of.
I can find out ANYTHING within minutes.

How to cook a pot roast.
Who was the 17th president of America?
I can read the New York Times, the London Times and Pravda.
I can find and join groups for left handed, red haired people who collect Star Wars figurines.
I can read thousands of books from Project Gutenberg.
I can become world famous overnight with a blog or a YouTube video.

I can sell or buy products all around the world.
I can study at a University on another continent.
I can get a job and telecommute to another country. (Think Indians who do customer service for Western companies)

What is more I can do all of the above while living in a log cabin on top of a mountain somewhere.

I can reply to YOUR post! I am in Australia, where are you?

Ain't the Net GREAT?

I don't multitask online. 99% of the time have just one tab open at a time. I do prefer the web to more traditional ways of gathering info, but tha'ts because it is accessible for the blind (most sites at least), so its'much easier to access than, say, a book. And I enjoy BBing, tweeting, blogging etc. because it's a way to communicate with others without having to meet htem face to face, and because writing for me is easier than speaking (conversationally at least, I do have normal speech/language abilities).

I think your assessment is wrong.

This on the other hand, seems to be on the right path.

I can be anything I want on the internet instead of a sad temprorily un-employed woman whose never had fun on dates in her entire life and talks to her dog, cat, and lizards more than she does with her own family. My life just ****ing sucks but I can lie on the internet and have fun for once. If I ever did post a picture on here I could touch it up and look like a totally hot chick with $$$. But I'm happy with my King Bowser symbol.

I think that this is probably the reason for most people. It's easier to have several tabs open at a time rather than several books.
I know that for me, I like doing it just because I like gathering new information whether or not it's about an obsession. I just think of something or hear about something and then decide to learn more about it. It's convenient.

I agree with this

pff i have a better explanation:

does anyone of you KNOW NT's your own age? especially if your over 18.
what are they doing?
are they online a lot?
NO.

they got a life by now. everyone i know has at least 2 kids now (i hate them and their kids)

so...

after a certain age, if you remain online, your most likely aspie :b

 Everybody on the internet is an aspie. Funny

I must say I do also like multiple tabs. I can flit between them as it takes my fancy

not too far from the truth, if you start looking around. and i mean especially among adults :D

it makes sense: normal people get a life! their social games are WAY more valuable to them than netsurfing
