I've just returned from my third solo trip abroad, which was my second trip to San Diego (to go to the four day super-event that is the San Diego Comicon), laden down with all kinds of cool stuff (sketches, toys, comics and the like), and pleased with myself for continuing to make the effort to go and do something with my life rather than sit at home and twiddle my thumbs.

I went out there to meet some friends - and, astonishingly, managed to make a couple of new ones in the course of a single conversation (which only started through the coincidence of my friend using the same phone charger as another attendee of the convention, a girl called Kendra who looked to be maybe in her mid-twenties at most). I spent so long talking to this girl and her friends that I forgot to go and hang out with the friends I'd gone there to see in the first place - and she even asked if she could add me onto her MSN contacts list so we could stay in contact... before she hugged me goodbye!

Sometimes, for a guy with Asperger's I have a bizarrely easy time talking to complete strangers and making them like me. It's really weird, and I have yet to understand how I do it...

I'm not sure you should be overthinking this though, that might break it or something

I know - perhaps learning the source of all my powers might be the worst thing I could ever do 8O

I spent a while having a fun little chat with Kendra on MSN today - we talked about my upcoming move and her artwork (she draws great little cartoons and has an account at DeviantArt.Com. At SDCC she urged me to go join up so I could leave comments :)). I'm really pleased I met her :)

I feel ya. I'll be doing the same thing in a couple weeks at GenCon in Indianapolis. Socializing is so much easier when everyone's passionate about why they're there.

Exactly! Sometimes I feel alone in the crowd, which is a really sucky feeling... but when I was there, even when I was on my own and surrounded by a mass of humanity that I didn't know, I felt so comfortable and able to talk to anybody I felt like talking to (and everybody knew what the hell I was talking about, too :)) that I never wanted to leave.

Of course, tomorrow I have to go back to a workplace where only one of my workmates shares my interests, which is really craptacular :(
