Adverts , what is morally OK and what is not ?
Last night the film "World Trade Center" (Oliver Stone 2006) was shown on TV in the UK. During one of the breaks an advert for a violent film (Gamer) was shown. The film was shown close to the date of the WTC attack which might make things worse.
Should the TV company quarantine some programs away from some adverts for moral reasons ?
Two examples of other adverts which I think that the average person will feel are not right for the programming are
A vodka advert in the break between parts of a program about the chaos, death and mayhem caused by drunken drivers.
and
An advert for guns in the break between half parts of a biography of John Lennon

No, not at all. If you're an adult and you let the stuff influence you, it's your own fault. If a kid watches it and is influenced, it's the parents fault. Either they shouldn't let them watch them, or the should teach them right and wrong, so they can make their own decisions. Of course, there are lots of exceptions, but why should they effect the rights of everyone else?

I agree with jawbrodt.
Personally though, I think all adverts should be confined to one and only ONE channel.
"The Advert Channel".
Who cares if no-one watches it, I'd be happier not to sit through break after break. Especially those ANNOYING GIMMICK-FUELLED ADVERTS such as GoCompare etc. It drives me insane. ![]()
I would not agree with the idea that "anything goes" and if you do not like it then you should just turn off or not read it.
If a pack of streakers were to run past a school, past the local church just as the little old ladies are leavings after their coffee meeting before they run into the sport standium and dash onto the pitch I am sure that many people would quite rightly be outraged. You would be very pleased if a group of cops arrest them and drive them away in a "black maria". That would be an example of a limit on "freedom of expression" which would be welcomed by almost all people.
I think that freedom of speech, thought and expression brings with it a responsibility to behave in a way which does not harm the interests of innocent by standers. Offending innocent bystanders and causing them distress is not right.
Another example.... I am sure that if (insert name of your least favourite bigot) was to come to wrong planet and then print some ugly lies about you, me and the rest of the community. Then you would be very pleased when one of the mods locked the thread, bans the troll and then for good measure censors the offending text. That would be another example of a community making a moral choice to not permit total freedom of expression where the person fails to take care to avoid upsetting the innocent bystanders.

I hate all commercials, adverts, whatever the f**k you wanna call them - I block them in Firefox, and I don't watch television because of them. Whether they're morally wrong or not doesn't really matter to me. The problem I had(See what I did there? Past tense!) was that the commercials just sucked so hard that I would literally get angry from watching them. If you wanna talk moral problems with commercials, try the fact that they are geared towards ret*ds. I don't know if you've ever pondered just how low these people think of you when they feel the need to DUB a person speaking in a commercial, and this in a country that's known for one of the highest English-literacy rates in Europe. So, we pay for this condescending s**t to be crammed into every 10 minutes of whatever crap programs our lovely Cable TV benefactors can be bothered importing, like season one and two of the Simpsons.
No, just no. BitTorrent.

^^ What he said. I hate advertising and I won't put up with it.
Besides what he said, I have additional problems with it.
Only the very large companies selling mediocre mass-produced products can afford huge advertising campaigns. There is better quality out there, produced by smaller manufacturers. Research and find it, then get it. Truly great products and services require no advertising. It is just that the typical consumer won't bother looking for them and will instead spend their money on whatever TV tells them to.
Ads would be okay if they merely stated truthful facts. But that is almost never the case. They distort the truth or tell outright lies, and get away with it. The audience is of course too uninformed to notice, or too conformist to care.
Advertising usually appeals to base instincts. Watch for this and you'll see what I mean. All ads can be broken down into these categories: sex, ego, fear. Alcohol ads typically use the sex angle. Car ads use the ego approach. Anything from pharmaceutical ads to burglar alarms to tooth brushes use the fear ads: "Buy our tooth brush or your teeth will fall out" is the message.
Finally, great many advertising campaigns aren't advertising at all. They are instead smear campaigns targeting their competition. Please please tell me a good reason why I should do business with you, NOT why I shouldn't do business with your competitior!

But whose 'morals' would be used as the basis for those decisions?

I hate those the most. Especially every ad Comcast puts out.
One time I took an online survey (the kind you get points for) and it was Comcast showing me an advertisement, and asking what I thought of it. I was honest, but I definitely could've been more brutal. In it, they were bashing Verizon, for having crappy Internet or whatever stupid claim they were making...I guess a lot of people complained about it, because by the time it hit television, they had changed "Verizon" to "AT&T". Like it makes any difference

Are there any adverts outside of England that pretty much state "Pay your car tax or we will murder you" or "If you don't own a TV license, we'll DESTROY YOU!!" and crap like that? I REALLY loathe those adverts.
