We had 9/9/99 and now this 9/9/09 and yet no talk of 10/10/10 or 11/11/11 or 12/12/12 (for 2010,2011,2012 respectively) What gives?

Simple. Those are in the future... there will be talk of them when the time comes.

Maybe it's just not time yet. After all, 10/10/10 isn't relevent till next October and 11/11/11 isn't relevent until the Novemeber after that. And in 2012, lots of people will inexplicably embrace Mayan prophecy and start blithering about that.

Thank you anna-banana.

Isn't the world ending before 12/12/12 anyway?

I'd say the odds of the world ending tomorrow are pretty low. A large rock travelling ludicrously fast (not your standard B-movie grade rogue asteroid, we need big stuff at just under the speed of light), or the Sun mysteriously going nova would do it, I suppose.

what the heck, its just a number....

I remember when such a date was in my city that applied to our local dial number. A celebration festival was arranged (my husband told me this today, I totally missed it) and all the babies born in the city on that day was invited to the city hall and got a free entrance to the amuzement park for the rest of their lives, lol!

999 is the emergency services number in the UK. I bet they're bracing for the crankcalls :D

Yes. Year 1 was chosen completely arbitrarily, and also beggining of a year (1/1) was chosen completely arbitrarily. A given year has no special significance whatsoever. Any given date in our calendar has no special significance whasoever, except for the solistice and equinox.

As for the Mayan calendar, well their calendaring system runs out of numbers in year 2012. That's all. It'd be like saying there's a giant Intel conspiracy because we can't have a number larger than 255 in an 8-bit integer.

I just read something that said that its the last single digit repetition until next millenium. So I guess that makes it special.

Probably just another hypnotic number pattern.
