There was a time when I actually thought I could become a comic book artist and I even created my own superhero. With Superman Returns in the theater, I decided to take a walk down memory lane and share him with you.
His name was Phaeton. His alter ego was Garret Rolas (yep, a clever anagram for the word "solar) and he is the son of the Greek god Apollo. His costume was like a Trojan warrior. His powers were flight, superhuman endurance, and super-strength. He also had a sword called the Solar-Sword, which was "forged in the flames of the sun" and could create heat-generated energy blasts, and a Solar-Shield, which could create force fields around himself and others (kinda like Invisible Woman in Fantastic Four or Violet of the Incredibles). He was only a "demi-god", (that's what you called those people who were the offspring of gods but weren't immortal) after all.
So, did any of you ever create a superhero? If so, what kind of powers did he or she have?

Some of the superheroes I've created in some of the fictional universes I've come up with.

The "Guardians of Light and Shadows" Universe

- Metrym Verraigne, Guardian of Darkness. This guy's probably my favorite character of all those I've created.
He has all the powers and needs of a vampire, but his position as one of the two Guardians who keep the balance of the universe allows him to become immortal until the time he is supposed to be slain in a ritual murder by his apprentice, whom he chooses by biting on the neck.
Unlike a vampire, the Guardian of Darkness must kill people before he drinks their blood if he doesn't wish to turn said person and make said person his apprentice, and as a result Metrym is responsible for quite a few murders.
He's very cocky, and rarely ever seen without a smirk or knowing smile on his face.
In terms of physical attributes, he has silver hair, golden skin, green eyes, and always wears black and blue. He carries the Shadowsword, a thin but powerful blade meant to keep down the population of those born of Light.

- Trevyr Martell. Trevyr is Metrym Verraigne's unwilling apprentice, who will at some point be forced to take up Metrym's position. Whereas Metrym revels in his superior mental and magical powers as a Guardian, Trevyr wants nothing more than to be an ordinary human leading an ordinary life.

-Emperor Vellyx the ninth- A guardian of Light who has unleashed ancient sorceries that will allow him to live past the time limit that the gods have allowed for him. As a result, he has been cursed, and has become an enormous gelatinous blob who dwells in a gargantuan fish tank in a chamber of gasses that only he can breathe.

- Yasadu Utuku - Yasadu is the -true- guardian of light. He's one of a peaceful race of humanoid felines that the joint Terek'Agurs empire is trying to stamp out. He mourns everyone he kills, whether on purpose or by accident, and is the only character in my story who actually believes in the concepts of love and peace.

The "Dark Arcanum" universe:

Professor Genovan: Think a younger version of Dumbledore from the Harry Potter books. Professor Genovan was a progidy in pretty much everything when he was only twelve years old, and at the age of thirty-six is considered the expert on modern sorcery. He works as a lecturer at Bardell Academy for Higher Learning, and can supply and obtain almost any item either legally or illegally.

Doctor Quentius: Doctor Quentius is Professor Genovan's mentor, said to know even more than his student. His major focus in his studies is demonology. He worked as an excorcist for the Lady of Eternal Sorrow Religious Hospital as an excorcist before he mysteriously disappeared from public sight ten years earlier, while researchng a mysterious cult in the west indies that had been brought to his attention by one of the hospital's patients.

Kaihan, emperor of the Vroojs: Travelling undercover as current abbot of a remote temple in west Asia rumored to have some connection with the West Indies Cult researched by Doctor Quentius. In his true form he's a total badass, with poisonous claws, boil-infested purple skin and the long pointed horns of a goat.

The "Warhawk" Universe

The Red Baron- I obviously didn't create this guy myself, but he is one bad muthaf*cka

Li Peng - A famous aviator, known as the Warhawk. He's the most recent of the Great Heroes, people assigned by the gods to turn the tides of war for the side they support. He appears at completely different times and places to act as the hand of his patron god, Ares.

The "Mark of the Beast" Universe (Kind of a crossover world, featuring several characters from "Dark Arcanum" and "Guardians of Light and Shadow", but it does have its share of original characters):

Pope Solomon: Self-explanatory. The Head honcho of the Catholic Church.

Sir Andrew: An Elite Knight of Swiss Guard Unit 666. The pope's personal bodyguard, who fights by summoning angelic light to blast away his enemies.

Sister Eve: An undercover Cyborg Vampire Hunter working for the Vatican.

Babba Jesus: A fortune teller who encountered both Quentius (See "Dark Arcanum") and Sister Eve in New Orleans. He usually charges good money to tell peoples' fortunes, but he made an exception for both Eve and Quentius.

Lucifer Cane: An alternate universe version of Metrym Verraigne. The one undead Sister Eve was never able to kill.

When I was young, I did some "comics" about a group I called the Time Travelers.

Now, my current "superhero" is a bit different.

He's old, ugly, bald, dresses like a 30s gangster, is homeless, walks around in the rain and mud, cries a lot, and steals food.

The stories typically occur in rural settings, so often farms are used as food sources.

His name?

Hero.

(and I'm being serious)

Sadly, the thought never really occurred to me to create superheroes, though I did create a huge variety of imaginary monsters, pantheons of strange gods, dozens of RPG characters, and the occassional military dictator. Generally, my own characters were, and still are, much closer to ordinary, or even sub-ordinary, people more often than anything else.

I don't think I would know how to create anything more than the most shallow and two-dimensional superhero or epic hero.

(I'll also take this opportunity to plug one of my favorite character creation toys, HeroMachine, at http://www.heromachine.com/ - both the online and downloadable version should work through the most popular web-browsers, and it has enough options to help to create a huge variety of different superhero-type characters, as well as martial-artists, science-fiction characters, Dungeons & Dragons style RPG characters, and even monsters and aliens. I just wish there were more options for eyes, noses, and mouths, but that's only a minor complaint....)

The characters I created really didn't have "super powers" but often would find themselves having to save the planet. . .from boredom. Each highly training in the skill of comedy. They were/are anthromorphic characters-curiously all female, hmmm.
They are (by order of creation):

1-Alicia Anaconda-(Group Leader-twin sister of my first character 'Melissa' who you will see on cards at kindtree)
2-Suzanna Skunk-(Just because I think skunks are cute animals. . .smelly but cute-Does the 'always single' comedy)
3-Chela Chinchilla-(My version of "Minerva Mink" but a bit more agressive in catching men)
4-Hailey Hare-(The intellectual of the group-sarcastic humor her specialty)
5-Nina Nutria-(Uses a 'Rosanne' type of humor-raunchy)
6-Felicia Ferret-(The clutzy one-does physical comedy)

Currently I am putting together a calendar featuring these characters. . .

Will be posting in the gallery section one or more of the calendar pages.

The Xanthron used to be superheros...

I've created a couple of characters that could be considered superheros.

'The Valconis Projects' (temporary name)
Set about our time, whe Kirsvet is (suprise) doing experiments on genetic manipulaton and graft and such. Three in this one:
A young female, narratior. She has a Ictylan morphing device implanted in her, and can morph (almost) at will.
An older male, who has a magnetic relay device in him, and can manipulate electricty and metals; making him almost telekinetic.
Another male. I'm not actually sure what he can do. Noone is.

Something inspired by Doctor Who:
'The Traveler of Arl'
Not exactly a superhero, but a myth about a man who has found a device that can transport one through time and space. very interesting.

Aspie Man

The Mighty BiPolar

White Star (Marilyn Monroe reincarnated as a Wonderwoman-type heroine)

Space Ace

etc. etc.

Normally I would give more detail, but my hands don't feel like typing very much this morning, and many people would probably just skim over it anyway. Someday I'll post more about them, and write some short stories for you guys to read. But that is for another time and place.

As a person being obsessed with the X-Men, since last December I created many mutant characters (19, if memory serves me). Not superheroes per se though, just people with the gene granting them powers – I always enjoyed TCP stories (tales of common people for those who don’t know the fanfiction jargon). You can find them all here: http://www.wrongplanet.net/postt91003.html Any comment on them? :D

Yeah. "Super Liam." He had the standard mask and cape, but he had pretty much any super power he wanted to have. He also starred alongside Patrick Star and Homer Simpson (in superhero form) in "Super Zeroes."
