It is called visual snow. I assumed everyone saw this in a dark room at night after their eyes had adjusted to the dark? There was a thread in General Autism Discussion recently on the topic but I got to it too late and it has slipped off the board.

I don't see it straight away after turning off the light, but if I wake up in the night and look around the dark room it is always snowing exactly like in the picture. I'd always assumed everyone saw this? Yes? No?

No. In fact I've never heard of it before.

I can see in the dark pretty well.

I too assumed everyone did this. You mean they don't? I daresay that some people may just not notice it because they are focusing on the actual objects in the room.

If I concentrate, I can actually see this snow when the lights are on as well.

In addition, when my eyes are closed I see it or a pattern of tiny turning gear type things.

It likely has to do with the human brain's natural tendency to look for patterns in randomness.

*edit* I just read about visual noise on wikipedia and transitioned naturally to the article on Closed eye hallucination and discovered that the things I see naturally are hallucinations typically caused by drugs or meditation?? I may actually be a bigger freak than I thought :chin:

If anyone reads the article, I have achived level 4 completely on my own from day dreaming. Actually I've daydreamed with my eyes open before and the things that I see and hear completely replace the actual physical objects in my field of vision or hearing which may count as level 5 lol.

I don't see it with lights on, but sometimes there is a certain amount of faint wispy fog drifting in my vision. I too always assumed everyone saw the visual snow in a dark room and put it down to lack of light to see clearly and the eyes just picking up enough photons to pick out the shape of things in shades of black / grey but with a lot of visual background noise due to the lack of light.

The recent thread in the other forum got me wondering though, so I thought I'd ask if others see it too. Maybe like you say they do see it but it doesn't consciously register. I'll have to wake my wife up tonight and ask her if she sees it :P - maybe not worth the risk - I'd probably end up seeing stars 8O

I've always called that "static".

I only see it when it's very dark and my eyes have adjusted.

But it's not to the extent pictured.

Yes, I see something like this at night when the lights are out. But sometimes I also see something very similar when looking out the window during the daylight hours. I looks as if there is a fine mist in the air or as if it is raining but almost imperceptibly.

I saw it more often as a child. Don't really see it anymore, unless when it is really dark.

yeah i see the snow. I have weird blood pressure fluctuations and often when I get up from a chair or sofa and see the snow and hear loud beeping. and yeah, always when getting up at night, plus all vertical and horizontal lines I see doubled. is that normal too?

yes i see the snow on the pic :I i also see similar stuff in total darkness

the other day i maneuvered by foot through total darkness, which was fairly uncomfortable cus the ground was uneven and full of puddles :D
i found out that by making a screen w my hands, to block out the stars above, i could actually see the ground :]

I see that, but to a lesser extent than in the picture. I first noticed it in my early teens.

Yep, i see the noise in the dark, if i close my eyes, if i cover my eyes and open them in my hands, and as i am looking at the drywall we have up, i see it there too. More colorful in the light. And maybe while i close my eyes. I like when i look at something, then i close my eyes and there is a shape that is darker than the rest of the noise (or maybe it was lighter, i can't remember) and it slowly moves upward and i open my eyes, close my eyes and it starts all over again. I see this for several minutes. I guess i get bored sometimes. lol!

I had no idea there were people who don't see it!
