Why do people pick at flaws that you obviously can't do anything about at that moment?

For example, a random person who I don't know/like will say to me, "There's a rip in your tights," or something like that. What the hell do they expect me to do about it, sit down in the corridor and get a sewing kit out?!

I was brought up to think that making "personal remarks" is rude, yet for some reason people think it's ok to say things like this, and then get pissed off at me when I say something like, "What do you expect me to do about it?"

I don't mind when people say something that is actually helpful, like "Your bag's open," because then I can stop my iPod, etc, from getting stolen. It's just when it's a pointless and unhelpful remark that it annoys and confuses me.

Maybe they thought that you didn't know you had a rip in your tights (to run with your example) and that they were being helpful in alerting you.

Alternately, maybe they thought you would be embarrassed at finding this out, and they wanted to have some fun out of making you embarrassed.

or maybe they took for granted you keep an extra pair with you and could rush off asap to swop...

When I was in 4th grade, a seam in my pants (near the a**/crotch) ripped open quite unexpectedly. My teacher, Mrs. Poopler (not her real name, but close enough), sent me to the Boys restroom with a small sewing kit (which she kept in her purse!) expecting me to mend it myself. I had never sewn a stitch in my life. Yeesh.

I did the best I could at the time. Poked a lot of bloodholes in my fingers, though...

I hate it when people do that.
