The average candy bar is suppose to have like 4 to 6 insect legs in it. *shrug*

I used to say "Good protein, I guess" to this but it turns out that insect legs aren't really a very good source of digestable protein. So, eh.

Junior Mints have a substance called confectioners glaze on the outside of the chocolate to make them shiny. Confectioners glaze is a secretion of the lac beetle....so it's kind of like bug juice.

Well, Neuroman, that web page article only confirms that bug juice is used.

Also says it's perfectly safe and edible, purified. So no different from it being made chemically or getting it from like a plant or something. But it is still derived from bugs.

Not on M&M's, but indeed on Junior Mints.

you can buy chocolate covered crickets over here and in most countries I think.

When I was young, I read in the paper about this girl who was bitten by a red-back spider inside a hollow chocolate easter egg. My aunt used to make her own easter eggs with melted chocolate and I refused to eat them because of that fact, and to this day, I still check before eating them.

I'm glad it's not Easter, because I would freak out about all the easter eggs I eat then. But I like the solid small ones better anyway. Isn't there like some stupid percentage of cockroach that all chocolate has in it because they can't keep them out? Hey, at least the chocolate still tastes good.

Are you talking about bugs in candy accidentally or when bugs are put in on purpose (like certain types of lollipops with whole crickets and tequila worms inside them)?

I am not a squeamish person. I have tried chocolate-covered crickets and ants on a few occasions and invariably found them to be disgusting.

If you put swedish fish in your pocket and sleep in your clothes and don't change for a week then when you take them out they might smell a little fishy....

Cochineal extract-that's a "bug juice" of another sort, used in consumables. The liquid that circulates in these bugs is the reddish stuff that's sought after-no, it's not urine or blood-perhaps more like their lymph fluid ? It's an alternative to the artificial red dyes (which caused a health scare) used in food & drink. Currently it's in a lot of edibles, incl. juice drinks-but I don't fret over it.
Heard public radio show about "the color red" recently, this was covered in detail.
