I've heard that you "follow" people and stuff, but what do you actually do on twitter?

I once made an account and within a minute of my new account I had like 5 emails in my inbox (hotmail) saying that so-and-so is following me and I got creeped out and left.

So whats so great about twitter anyway? Like can you add people as your friend and stuff or is it only about status updates??

Yes you can follow people or their interests on Twitter, but sometimes the person you are following might not be inteesting to you but those who following him or are being followed
by him may be of interest. Most of who I follow are technology, science, and culture sites.

Click on my Twitter: http://twitter.com/richieM9 and check out the 29 who are following me and the 125 that I am following. I find it to be a great source of news and info. In fact I found your
post above via twitter. :P

I love twitter. It allows me to talk and share news with people who are interested in the same kind of things that I am. Also, I find that is allows me to be social without having to deal with actual social interaction.

You do tend to get followed by people who just want to sell you crap, but you can always block them.

I don't have a Twitter account, simply because I don't lead an interesting enough life to update what I'm doing on a daily basis.

Neither do 99% of the people with Twitter accounts, but that doesn't stop them.

I do occasionally look at the pages of people I find very interesting. It's ridiculous what you have to go through to follow a conversation between people, especially more than 2 people. It's okay for sort of shouting at the universe. It seems more suited to one way communication than dialogue.

Twitter is pretty good, here's mine: http://twitter.com/superboyian but I don't use it frequently though but I will get round to checking it more often.

I think it's ridiculous. I gave it a try, and realized it was just a "status update" engine, in my mind. Not at all this revolutionary cultural phenomenon its heralded to be, so I gave up fairly quickly.

News feeds and RSS and regular Googling and using one's eyes are for news and updates.

But that's only my opinion. I think it's some sort of drug, because my roommate apparently joined one half hour past. His message on his perfectly adequate facebook status feed?

"Crap! I joined twitter."

His use of the colloquial "crap" suggests that he dislikes this development, and considers it poopy.

Yet he joined. Clearly an addiction response, because it has no practical value. And he's already a clear, admitted, and hardcore facebook addict.

Or perhaps some people just want to enjoy themselves and can use twitter to do so. Maybe it's not all a mind control conspiracy. Maybe... if we could use twitter to our advantage... then we could... you know... do stuff.
