I need to find something filling. My portions aren't cutting it. Half a cup of cereal in the morning? Forget that! I don't know how to be satisfied with just a little bit, normal, healthy portions. I feel like I could eat two ribeyes, a heaping mound of potatoes and the fixins.

And I need a tasty alternative to soda. I love regular (non-diet) soda. Diet soda is just icky to me. Fruit juice is more healthy but loaded with sugar. Water is like drinking air; flavorless and blah.

Any suggestions of soda replacements?

Actually, to tell the whole truth - I don't really feel like dieting. I don't feel unhealthy but I look at myself and I see the results of the scale at the Dr.'s and I see that I need to diet. My cholesterol is rising. It's gone up to 117 from 112 in just a month. I weigh 309 lbs. My blood pressure is rising.

I'm slowly dying if I don't suffer a stroke or heart attack first.

Do you dislike all artificial sweeteners, or just diet soda? You could use crystal light, or tea/iced tea/herbal tea/whatever with whatever artificial sweetener you most prefer. I use lots of artificial sweeteners and am fine with diet soda, so I'm probably not the best person for determining what the artificial sweeteners that taste most like sugar are, but splenda is supposed to taste more like sugar than older sweeteners, and there's a new one called Truvia. Coupons.com has a $1 off coupon for it if you want to try it.

It's a good idea to drink a lot of water or whatever you finally settle on that you like to drink along with whatever you eat.. makes it expand more in your stomach. That increases if you eat stuff with a lot of fiber in it. Oatmeal is particularly good for that. And of course salads, fruits, etc.. Lean meats help fill you up, too.

A lot of it depends on what you like. Nothing I recommend is gonna help if it's not something you'd actually want to eat.

Edit: Oh! and the oatmeal is good for your cholesterol too!

Edit #2: Air popped popcorn! But it must be air-popped. Even the "light" kind of microwave popcorn has a lot more fat and stuff than air popped. You can use like a cooking spray and popcorn seasoning, there are cheesy ones, or butter buds. I like garlic on popcorn too, but I'm weird.

Wellll, personally i love V8 juice. It's actually vegetable juice and as far as i know minimal on the sugar. but delicious...well, to me anyways. & healthy :D

also you could try licorice tea. With nothing added in it, it has a watery taste going down. but it has a really nice sweet aftertaste that i love :).

and i suppose if you want something filling for the mornings i'd recommend some of the heavier cereals like raisin bran (it's not bad), or wheaties. both of which pretty much feel more filling than they really are and aren't particularly high on sugar content.
honey bunches of oats is another good one :).

or as maggiedoll said, the hot cereals (grits, oatmeal, cream of wheat, etc.) are pretty filling.

but remember, diets mainly only keep more fat from accumulating and stabilize internal health. What would REALLY help things is if you included regular exercise in this too.

Have you ever consider having sushi for lunch?
Apparently as i heard i think it was ment to fill you up and plus its low in fat on top of that :D
Also its known as healthy :) Dietting as Seanmw has said only stores more fat.

Have you ever thought of having orange juice?

Eat less rice and potatoes, and eat more meat and produce.

Yea, sushi is good too. And if you make it it's not even expensive. Takes awhile, though. And if you don't have a really sharp knife you have to cut it with a razor blade to keep it from falling apart.. LOL

If you stick with the small portions for a few days, your stomach will shrink to a size that doesn't require stuffing to feel full.

Here's a few offhand:

eat more fresh vegetables, and salads, as fresh veggies have subtantially less caloric content than starchy foods. If you eat salads, use a basic (olive) oil and vinagar/vinagrette dressing instead of creamy dressings.

Also, instead of using butter on bread, or to cfry stuff, use olive oil instead. --I actually prefer the taste of extra virgin olive oil over butter.

I don't know how much of a substitute this is for soda, but I drink water quite a bit. Also, I drink very strong coffee which is sweetened with either honey, or unrefined demerara/turbinado sugar, like that stuff that Domino now sells. --It's essentially nothing more than the sugar crystals left over after sugarcane juice is evaporated.

Forgot about that. I remember being homeless and not having eaten in three days. I finally got something to eat and I felt full on just a few bites.

Oh yeah, the diet's gonna start after the holidays!

You need to investigate things like the GI index, and also maybe eating some protein for breakfast.

Here are some ideas, basically what I eat

Breakfast ideas

Cereal, low fat milk, chopped banana

Cereal and yoghurt

Fruit and yoghurt smoothie

Poached egg and bacon sandwich

Scrambled eggs (2)

Omelette (2 eggs) topped with chives, ham, cheese, tomatoes, mushrooms, parsley

Lunch

Sandwich

Salad with meat, chicken or fish

Soup

Dinner

Lean meat, chicken or fish (150-200g) with a small potato or Basmati rice and vegetables

Also I would take a multi vitamin and look at taking magnesium as that can help with craving sugar.

For drinks, you could try mixing a small amount of fruit juice and water, or maybe a diet cordial.

But in response to what you wrote, try some eggs and yoghurt, not together though hahaha

Eggs are said to keep you from being hungry even into the following day, and yoghurt is low GI.
