The previous day, I made the filling for a couple of pumpkin pies. I planned to bake them in the oven later, whenever I had the time. The pies did have a couple of raw eggs in them. But of course, I didn't plan to leave the pies unbaked for more than two days.
Mother-In-law and Father-In-Law woke me up at 11:30pm just to tell me that eggs will spoil if left in the fridge too long. I said that I would bake the pies as soon as I got home from work. They kept going on and on about the dangers of raw eggs, how they will spoil, blah, blah, blah.
So I told told them, "I'm very well aware of that. Well, goodnight." And then I went back into my room.
At freakin' midnight, they pounded on the door again and called my fiance out of the room. They told him all about how I snapped at them and how rude and disrespectful I was. They told him about how they were only trying to help me and that they have thirty years of cooking experience, so they know what they are talking about.
All I did was say, "I'm very well aware of that."
I mean, I run a freakin' cookie business! Didn't it ever cross their minds that maybe, just maybe, I ALREADY know about food safety?! I would be in alot of trouble if I didn't.
Not to mention, I took a culinary class in high school.
A whole entire unit was dedicated to the handling and preparation of EGGS!
What. The. Eff!
And besides, who DOESN'T know that eggs will expire when left in the fridge too long?
And WHY did they have to wake me up in the middle of the night to tell me THAT?!

There is an odd and unhealthy obsession with raw eggs in America. Realistically, the chances are slim to none of getting sick from raw eggs. In Europe raw eggs are served in tons of meals.
Way too paranoid. I make a killer tiramisu, only because i do it the traditional italian way which includes raw eggs. I've brought it into work and they rave about how they've never had tiramisu that tasted so good. I'm totally evil and dont tell them why =P I just say it's an old family recipe that i cant share.
Also, a real Alfredo sauce is raw egg, cream, and a bit of parmesan cheese, not cooked or mixed over heat or anything, just mixed and let the heat of the pasta melt the cheese. It is soo freaging good, but you wont find any restaurant in America that makes it and unless you've got good italian cooks in your family you've probably never had the pleasure of a traditional fettucini in alfredo sauce. My mom used to, she's stopped though, not because of the possibility of getting sick, but in favor for a healthier version in that there isnt like 2,000 calories in a small bowl of it =P.
p.s. They make pasteurized eggs in the shell now. Little bit more expensive. Do anything you want with them. I have noticed they dont whip as well, if you need to whip the whites you'll definitely need to add a bit of cream of tartar.

oh, and also, that situation just sucks. Because you know you're right, and no matter how you try to explain to them the fact that you are right, they will just see it as you being difficult and not listening.

They woke you up at 11:30PM, what do they expect? I think anyone would be rude if they got woken up in the middle of the night because they are tired and they want to get back to sleep. But at least you were nice and not grumpy. It could have been your tone of voice that made them think you were rude.

Hmm, as I could recall, my face was completely expressionless, my body was relaxed, my arms hung limp at my sides, and my voice was flat and monotone. I always get like that when I am tired.
I didn't snap. My definition of snapping is suddenly yelling, and taking an aggressive body posture and face. I did none of those things.

Why did I not think of this?
In another forum (consisting of mainly older female NTs) that I post at for input, a person said, "you know it probably had nothing to do with eggs spoiling...just a future In-Law thing...has to do with power, and the loss of it over their son..."
Next time I'm having in-law issues, I'll just try to remember that. It seems... slightly plausible, right?
Are people really that trivial and insecure?

People are paranoid about lots of food in the US.. (probably because small outbreaks of food poisoning get widely publicized) steak is fine to eat raw too. The only reason it sometimes isn't is because it gets dirty in the slaughterhouse, but they've been working on that.
I've also eaten raw bacon and been fine, but I'm not sure if that one's really safe.
Anyway CleverKitten, your in-laws sound weird. XD;;;
Maybe you sounded snappish because you just woke up or something.
Anyway, eggs last forever in the shell.. do they real spoil a lot faster out of it? D: I've never had problems with eggs, even out of the shell. I don't know where some people get these crazy paranoias. XD;;
I have a friend who never leaves butter out of the fridge because she thinks it will spoil. How does she spread it??? lol

Yes, they do expire if left in the fridge for too long.... Apparently some people actually eat raw eggs and no it is not very good for you mainly the people who work out alot in the gym tend to do that the most.
The british people apparently have their scrambled eggs half raw when I went to a hotel at margate, the next day, ive heard someone got food poisoning from it. WOW!
CleverKitten, apparently you can get food posioning that way which i assume you already know that.
But the part when your mother-in-law was saying you was being disrespectful part, I would of apparently acted the same way. Unfortunelately I went through that similar stage this morning.
