What's the big deal with that New Year's song named "Auld Lang Syne"?

It's always been impossible for me to keep from laughing at it because singing "Auld Lang Syne" sounds just like they're singing "Old Lame Song"

I don't really understand it either, it just seems to be a tradition thing. In my family, we tend to form a chain as we sing this whilst walking out the back door, closing it behind us and walking back in the house through the front door and then celebrating a toast. This is meant to signify a new year, new start in which you take everything from last year and all your problems out the back door and enter through the front door a new person. If only life were that easy......

I don't understand it much, either. A person can change at any point during the year, and I'd rather celebrate Christmas than New Years.

Or "Old Anxiety" - what I thought it sounded like when I was kid.

It means old times or something like that.

The Guy Lombardo version is a must for any party DeeJay to play at the stroke of midnight.
Its the tradtion.

On newyears 2001 I followed the song with Chuck Brown's Go-Go version of the 2001 theme which starts with Brown saying "In two thsusand one..".
The crowd loved it.

What I dont understand is why did they put new years between December and January (one third of the way into winter).

Why not put new years at the start of spring like they do in most cultures?
