What's the dang difference? Aren't they interchangeable or is there really a difference?

Geek = A person who has chosen concentration rather than conformity; one who pursues skill (especially technical skill) and imagination, not mainstream social acceptance. Geeks usually have a strong case of neophilia.

Nerd = Anyone with an above-average IQ and few gifts at small talk and ordinary social rituals.

Yes, one can be both and chose their own title preference - though society usually refers to this type as just "Plain Weird". - (from experience)

Geeks talk about having phasers from star trek with their friends, nerds actually make them out of scrap electronic parts.

I generally think of the terms as interchangeable. And I certainly consider myself a geek/nerd. But I wish I was better with computers, like most of them seem to be. XD

Slang should have a set definition, but these two words have none it seems.

Well...Like Asmodeus said, Geeks geek-out on what nerds build. (paraphrased)

I'm certainly not the type of geek that bites the heads off of chickens.

I guess I'm both. The definition of nerd that you described sounds very much like most people with AS. And I'm a nerd because I dress up in Jedi robes and go out to practice lightsaber choreography at like ten PM around once a week.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe a geek is supposed to be somebody who is really smart and really interested in one particular subject (which would make me a "SpongeGeek"), while a nerd is generally smart at various subjects, TV portrays them as people who are really good at computers, maths, science etc. However, they are both similar, even if my definitions are wrong.

I remember when I used to think a nerd was a cross between a Nimrod and a turd.

I think I'm a either a geerd or a neerk.

I consider myself a band geek, but when it comes to electronics and science, I'm a nerd. Dorks are a whole nother story.

Haha!! Ok, I would have thought the definitions should be the other way around, but that just leads me back to Asp-Z's diagram. hehehehe
