Chatty Cashiers?

Am I the only one who gets annoyed when the cashiers at Walmart or wherever I am are too chatty? I get that it's their job to be friendly and welcoming but I just want to tell them "I don't want to tell you how my day's going, I don't care about your opinion on whatever I'm buying, I didn't come here to have a conversation with you, please just scan the freaking stuff so I can go home." Then again, supermarkets are always so crowded and I'm so antisocial that I'm always stressed out before I even get to the checkout line.

I also feel the same about chatty cashiers. They thrive on small talk and I loath it.

It's really annoying, especially when they're chatting and laughing with the customer ahead of me and taking forever.

I think sometimes cashiers are secretly trained to be annoying by doing everything at the speed of a snail, putting their customer on hold instead of whoever is on their phone, and asking nosy questions about the stuff you are buying, oh how I hate that last one.

I just find them funny.
Yesterday a cashier told me her dream about an enourmous black bear chasing her. I'm also not sure if she was sober.
But it was kinda entertaining.

I worked in retail for 28 months doing custodial stuff. Some customers as well as other workers are pretty chatty & I kind of learned to talk with em alittle. Chatty cashiers don't bother me too much as long as they're not taking much longer because of the talking.

I dislike when anyone who is working directly with people is too chatty. It is usually about something nonsensical and it prevents them from doing their job.

Thankfully chatty cashiers aren't really a problem where I live.

Don't get me wrong, being a cashier must be a pretty boring and tiring job. And of course, there are customers who are not only annoying, but just plain lunatics. I know I could never handle such a job.

I think I would have a nervous breakdown with a job like that. Way too much "multitasking," which is really a horrible way to work. I like to be consistently busy. It makes the day go by much faster.

I actually like a friendly chatty cashier. It makes me smile. Usually I'm stressed at supermarkets because of the noise of kids, but if I go to a cashier who is friendly, it often cheers me up. It also makes me feel noticed and respected. One time I walked into a supermarket feeling rather irritated with people getting in my way and brats running about near me, but as soon as a friendly cashier was chatting to me, I felt happy and I came out of the supermarket feeling joyful.

I agree with you on that. Sometimes I like it when the cashier is friendly and chatty. It's stressful enough to be in the supermarket and I usually try to go during non-peak times. Honestly the area I'm in most of the cashiers usually are very unfriendly and try to get the customers through the line as fast as possible. That's fine but sometimes it is a little overwhelming being pushed through a line like that as fast as possible and you see them getting frustrated if you aren't going as fast as they would like. So yes, a chatty cashier is sometimes great and I think it definitely helps make a stressful grocery trip a little less stressful c:

In my town there are now a variety of self check out options.
Walmart, Home Depot, and Stop and Shop (groceries), and Target all have self check out.
And I can order my food at the McDonald's kiosk.

I like friendly, smiling people. I vastly prefer that to frowning, disgruntled ones. The type of chatty people I dislike are the ones talking nonsense to each other on the job rather than actually performing the job.

Sometimes people in line act like they're a celebrity being interviewed and the clerk is a talk show host, and I'm impatiently waiting for the show to be over.

I don't like using the self-service machines. It always says "help is coming" when I am doing everything properly and there's not always a member of staff in sight so I'm just standing there helplessly, and I get agitated. Once I just had 2 simple items (a bottle of juice and a loaf of bread) and I spent about 15 minutes at a very obstinate self-service machine that wouldn't co-operate. It put me off using those things.
