He's a brat so how can the mother say she is sweet?

Perhaps it is just to keep up appearances.

I think it's a joke... the fact that the mother's opinion of her son is so far at odds with the reality.

Mothers seem to perceive reality differently...

she says it, and to be funny, the director immediately cuts to a scene that shows he's most certainly *not* the sweetest little boy.

if she know it (i haven't seen the movie), you're also being shown that she's lying, i would assume to bring something about (ie, manipulate a situation).

but basically, it's a joke.

Love that movie.

I've met mothers like that btw. I use to work as cashier at a thrift store and this lady would come in with her son. She'd ask me "Isn't he the cutest little thing?" The kid looked dirty and was always grabbing stuff from racks and then throwing them on the ground.

And she thought it was sooooo cute..

She probably said that so her manager (or whoever that guy was) would give her permission to bring her son along. And I agree with a couple of the other posters - it was mainly for comedy purposes.

"I'm sorry, but I'm going to have to kill your son!" (brandishes shovel)
