I am only 5ft11 inches tall. Its sucks because society has this horrible picture that all men should be 6ft4.

Any advice? I am 20 years old and crossing my fingers for a late growth spurt.

Are you hanging around a lot of basketball players or something?

http://answers.google.com/answers/threadview/id/65.html

Quote:
that uses data from a 1994 survey.

According to the Height Analyzer, the percentage of men taller
than 6'4" is 0.5%.

The analyzer provides a graph that "shows the distribution of men's height in
the United States. This is most well
known as a bell curve, because it is shaped as a bell. The median height for
men in the United States is 5' 8½"[2].
This means that half
of all men are taller than this height and half are shorter[3]. As you can see
from the bell curve, most men's
height are near the median. As you look at heights in either direction away
from the medium, there are smaller
numbers of men at that height. The bell curve is also called the normal curve.
The middle 95% (mathematically,
plus or minus two standard deviations) is the normal range. 93.6% of men are
between 5' 3" and 6' 2"."

Erm, I didn't mean the above to sound harsh or anything. :?

I'm 6'0", and I'm usually taller than most of the people I'm around. I haven't found my height to be a big issue. As far dating I am clueless, but I don't have the impression my height has been a been part of the problem(s).

Seems like some people (some women) will talk like they want really exaggerated qualities (rich guy, 6'6", Navy SEAL, who commands attention of everyone everywhere), but in reality they end up with some ordinary guy, not superman. Like guys wanting women with enormous boobs -- a nice thought, but not as necessary as it might seem when it comes to reality.

That's my theory, anyway.

As a woman, I have to say that although I prefer men to be taller than me, it's not a requirement. In fact, one of my biggest crushes during elementary school through junior high was a boy who hardly grew at all and couldn't have been taller than 5'2" by the time we were in 9th grade. In his case, I liked him for his sense of humor and charisma.

hello there- if you had to choose, which would you prefer- to be tall or to be a genius? [i'm NOT saying you are anything but a genius]
robert reich [secretary of labor under clinton] is a short man but man does he have a tall brain.
would you rather be tall or be mr. virile? [like a prolific porn star or warren beatty]
would you rather be tall or be saviour of mankind?

there is a world of things better than being tall. i am 6'3 [was taller but mr. arthur itis has stooped me over somewhat]- all things being equal, tall folk are more subject to the force of gravity than less-tall folk. musculskeletal ailments tend to afflict tall folk more than less-tall folk who have a more useful leverage, btw. when i was in the military it was the compact folk who could effortlessly do pushups and sit-ups 'till the cows came home- tall me had to struggle mightily just to do the minimum.
IOW, count your blessings, as there will always be somebody who is taller. but you are young and likely will continue to grow at least a bit.

I am 5' 9", and it does not affect me any, because I am average, like you at 5' 11". Everything is built for average hight, so we are doing okay.
Now for my aunt, who is under 5 feet, things are much more of a challenge, when everything is made for the average size! Just imagine what it is like to be under 5 feet, and you will see that we are lucky to be average sized.
I recommend you watch "Little People, Big World" on TLC (if you dont get that channel/show, you can find many episodes on youtube)

5"11 is good height, actually it's just about right for a man, really. I'm 5"11 1/2 myself.

Really though, you can't go by what society pictures people to be, they picture all women to be 95 lbs and fit in size 1.. then there's anorexia..

Well I'm 5/3 but even though I'm female I'm still seemingly pretty short for my even among females.

I feel like the little munchkin from wizard of oz whenever I'm around anyone.

Hmmm.... :( and I'm shorter than you and your height is actually pretty taller than average.
I would be pretty proud of that if I was you...

I am also 5'11 and 20 years old, and I really don't see how this is affecting you negatively.

Actually i hardly think society expects men to be 6'4''. I'm pretty sure that bit is all in your head. I'm 6'2'' & i hardy ever see anyone taller than me, let alone 6'4''. 6'4'' seems more to me a rarity, rather than any kind of standard in male height. :?

You are actually taller than the average i think.....unless you grew up in a statistically anomalous town. I suppose there could be one out there somewhere filled with giants, & being 5'11'', if you grew up around in a place where the norm was 6'4'', i could see why you might feel that way :P .
