Interesting, I've been trouble shooting my diet for the last few years because I was fed up with intestinal pain, excruciating chest pain(gas), and acid reflux. I ended up finding that it helps a lot more than I expected to eat what my body can ideally handle. I've found a high increase in ability to focus, enhanced reflexes and coordination, much better reign on my mood/emotions, and far less innate anxiety. Also, I rarely have to deal with insomnia anymore due to the high reduction of intestinal distress, and the sleep definitely helps too.
My mother has always had really bad GI issues, so I probably inherited such. Though, my current diet isn't really based around health food. From what I understand, everyone has their own quirks in dietary needs, and have their own list of sensitivities. I've been LEAP tested, and have quite a few that'd not be as much an issue in past generations, or if I lived in another country where the food was simply food... and not near a hundred point long list worth of cheap filler ingredients. I cannot really handle much for soy, and dairy. I've also personally found it best to stay away from peppers, vinegar, whole breads, grains, fruits, nuts, sulfuric/fibrous vegetables, and high fat foods.
On a side note, I've started to wonder how strongly the common food staples in other countries affect things like culture, temperament, and work ethic.
