I finally watched this movie with my family and thoroughly enjoyed it.

I was familiar with the book, which was a favorite with my children but the movie has a much broader plot.

The main character, Flint Lockwood (who does NOT appear in the book) shows clear signs of Asperger's Syndrome, which seems to be deliberately examined at a number of different levels.

The movie also seemed to be quite a clever metaphor for the state of the world today on a number of different levels.

Update:

I revised this thread with a list of things that seem to suggest AS in Flint Lockwood, which you can find in the 3rd post of this thread.

Or he could be shy. I did not see really any signs. He seemed to just really want to help people with his inventions.

I was going to make a list of the evidence in the movie that points to Flint Lockwood (the star of 'Meatballs') having Asperger's Syndrome but it seems someone has already done so.

Web Link:
Flint Lockwood Asperger's Syndrome

Here's the evidence:

Cody The Maverick wrote:
Does Flint Have Asperger's???

---Talking(saying what I'm doing)Singing(his own theme music) to himself

---Sam-"You seriously spend a lot of time alone" Flint-*Awkward chukling"

---Steve(and the Ratbirds, to an extent) are his only friends, before meeting Sam

---Above average IQ, also using advanced vocabulary and talking very fast

---Passionate interest in science and inventing, almost all he ever talks and thinks about

---Wears his lab coat wherever he goes, and how dissapointed he gets when he loses it

---Has never even been in a snowball fight before, (explains that he doesn't know the rules) and his awkwardness and enthusasim(sp?) when he does get in one...

---Sometimes has awkward social moments, like when he tried to kiss Sam several times,
or when she talked about her experience as a nerd(there's MANY more, just too many to list...)

---Can see the goodness in people and things that not that many people can,
like Sam, the Mayor, or his dreams of "creating something awesome" And how he is naturaly very nice almost all the time(he's rarely angry and never mean, and when he is mean, he dosen't mean to do it)

---Sometimes has awkward walk or run (Seen multiple times throughout movie)

---Does not understand fishing metaphors, also "How are you going to top this?-Maybe with hot fudge?" and his awkward laughter afterwards...(many more examples...)

---Many very strange facial expressions...and his expressions being either "all or none" and never "in the middle" and how quickly he goes from "all to none" or vice versa. The dinner scene with his dad is a good example(AREN'T YOU PROUD OF ME!?!?)

---Does not look people in the eye most of the time when he's talking(The "can you look me in the eye and tell me..." scene is a GREAT example)

---How, in his mind, he seems to "age backwards" How he acts more like an adult as a kid and more like a kid as an adult.

---How he always must tell the truth("Can you keep a secret? NO. But this time, yes.)

---How he can remember little details, even they may be just briefly mentioned(like how he remembered that Sam liked jello, even though it was a little detail, and is never mentioned again untill the jello dome scene)

Anyway, what do you think about Flint having Asperger's?

-Cody The Maverick (author of this list)

I think there is perhaps a slight hint of Asperger's in this

It's an absolutely brilliant movie. Irrespective of any AS link, it's well worth watching.

I agree; I thought it was a glorious production which I found very uplifting.

There is an obvious glutteny theme throughout the movie but I also thought that this could be seen as a metaphor for the Global Financial Crisis GFC (whether intended by the makers or not).

The town Policeman even comments to the angry townsfolk that the problem has been 'made to order' by EVERYONE (example of metaphor?)

I think this film would make good curriculum material in High School social science/economics, I mean food (and money) don't just drop out of the sky, do they :?:

Yes, there are messages about greed and the environmental, but not in an annoying way. I like the matter-of-fact way it's been included. Normally these messages are either sneaky or patronising, but that's not the case with this film.

I thought the entire movie was very sophisticated.

It could have been made as a non-animated movie, like the Grinch, but I actually prefer it like this.

What does "seeing the goodness in people" and "being nice all the time" have to do with Asperger's?

Haven't seen the movie but I am intruiged to see it after reading this thread.

That would also be a perfect movie for me, since I love spaghetti. :)

I watched it for the first time today and It compelled me to google the title of the movie +"aspergers" and bingo! I got to this page. I also strongly think that Flint shows traits of AS.

Beautiful story, fun visuals, just an all around a great movie to watch. And after reading what you wrote I think it could relate to Asperger's.
