An ego boost from the multiverse theory

This is something I just really thought about for the first time. According to the multiverse theory, there is an infinite amount of parallel universes, and every possibility exists in at least one of these universes. So next time things get rough, just think: somewhere out there, you are dictator of the universe.

Not only that, but you also have infinite dictatorships, in an infinite number of universes.


Cool concept, huh?

Bear in mind that the universes have to be consistent with physical laws, and that there's an absolute upper limit on the transmission of information; you cannot be dictator of the universe. Even if you stayed alive for a very long while (entirely possible if anything (consistent) can happen, your body could just happen to keep itself in perfect condition by freak accidents of quantum physics, the radius that you could influence (also the radius that could possibly acknowledge you as dictator) is bound by (speed of light)*(time elapsed since you became able to give orders); the radius that you could give orders and receive information back from is half that, and in practical terms the radius you could directly control in any detail would be very small, as you'd be waiting a long time for replies.

And who wants the bother of a country estate?
A country estate, is something I'd hate!

In that case, switch it to knocking boots with Brooklyn Decker; that would be a pick-me-up.

I discovered multiverse theory a few years ago. Mostly I'm bitter because in this universe I didn't get the guy, but in an alternate universe we are together. Not fair. I find no comfort in this theory.

Keep in mind that in yet another universe, you had a really nasty breakup, and he buried your body in his basement...

In another universe, I still work at the first job that I've had, and I don't have depression.

Would it also be true to say that there is no guarantee that there is a universe out there in which I (or any other given person) is even a dictator of so much as a single country.
In other words, since there are different degrees of infinity, there is no guarantee that everything that can happen will (or should that be does?) happen somewhere in the multiverse?

I think that's what I understood from David Deutsch's fabric of reality book. And that book is what first taught me about the multiverse theory.
(Or perhaps it was the Back to the Future films.)

The problem is that multiversity like Big Bang/Crunch is a zero net sum deal. If I am miserable in X univerrses and ecstatic in X universes, and all I have access to is HERE and NOW ... So what?

When I look back on my life, some incidents make me cringe just to think about them. I wish they would just disappear down the memory hole.
But then I think of the multiverse theory, and I think that time is just an illusion, and that somewhere in the multiverse there I "still" am making ass of myself.

It's a slightly modified line from "Careless Whisper" by George Michael; the word in the song is "guilty" instead of Aspie. I felt pretty clever after I came up with it.

It definitely fits me; my brain has tons of rhythm, but my feet tend to have trouble translating.

Multiverse theory is about all the different quantum states of particles that could have possibly occured. Physics doesn't care about us humans or our so called free will. There could be, for example, another universe identical to our own, except for a single proton in another galaxy in a different quantum state from the proton in our universe.

How do our lives fit into this theory, our destinies, our free will and self determination? I don't think today's science can answer that. It is a question for philosophers.
