i dunno- maybe. it would be of limited utility, for one would only be delaying the inevitable. there was a twilight zone episode about this subject- the lady protagonist found an exotic necklace that when she wore it, if there was something that disturbed her, she could freeze time around her- this allowed her to do some mischief such as shoplifting at the supermarket and groping an attractive man, but at the end when the russian missiles were plummeting towards her city, and everybody around her was going ape$#!+, she stopped the time and then went outside and saw everybody frozen in mid-stride, with the missiles stuck in the sky. it was implied that this would be for eternity unless she started time again which would have resulted in a nuclear holocaust. if it were me in her place i would just as soon have it all over with. i can see for the "stop the world, i wanna get off!" types, this would be a useful break in the action, sufficient for them to catch their breaths. i would use it as a deliberative tactic, giving me more time to think about my actions before i undertook them.
now if you had asked would anybody go back in time or forwards in time, i would have given a qualified yes.

i would sleep and work on school work. after that i would wander around the world.
i'd prefer just to fast forward to the end of this semester. i'm having severe homesickness. distracting me from school work. also my horrid painting teacher is distracting me as well.

By the way, what is the pr on the end? The rest I get - long time favorite of my wife.

But - no - I think [have read quite a bit of sci-fi exploration of the subject] time freeze, while at first an attractive idea, in reality is more trouble than it is worth. Generally it is tantamount to YOU accelerating, which just is exhausting.

Instead, I would love to be able to move my home, or office, or self, temporarily to an uninhabited parallel universe. Step out the front door, you are in Peoria. Step out the back door, you are on your porch looking out across vast plains, or into a clearing in virgin forest.

Depends on how long the effect would last. Permanently stopping time wouldn't be my cup of tea, but if I could temporarily stop it or slow it down, it could help me a lot in a melee.

I think a cooler power would be not so much being able to affect time itself as affecting people's perception of time. Say for example, you were able to slow down your perception of time in your mind's eye, kind of like the Matrix but different because it is your mind that has sped up; your body still exists in normal time. So, say for example somebody shot at you, with this heightened perception of time you would be able to see the bullet coming toward you in slow-motion and mentally react to it faster; however your physical reaction would be at normal speed. Even with this, all it would take is a small sidestep or dodge to get out of the way of the bullet, something you could do with less wasted movement because the bullet is moving slow enough where you can predict its trajectory.

In addition, you could also freeze people's perception of time temporarily, kind of like Rolo's power in the anime Code Geass. Basically, whenever he used his Geass, anyone within a set radius of him would have their perception of time frozen. To the person affected by this, it would appear that Rolo was teleporting around, but in reality he would be moving normally, while the affected person would not be able to move or sense anything until the effect lifted, causing them to have a 5-second or more lapse, after which they awaken. In other words, the person's mind skips ahead, and their body cannot move or function in any way until it catches up.

I'm Autistic so I vote yes as it would give me extra time to figure out what people mean when they are talking to me as well as have more time to respond.

No. I don't want to be stuck on this earth forever and without time, there's no way out (then again without time there would be no existence of me anyway, so maybe I would).

The important question is how would the interface between your (running) time and the world's (frozen) time work? It isn't trivial: you need to be able to see, you need to be able to breathe, you need to be able to touch things, you might burn or freeze very quickly (it would kinda depend), it'd definitely not as straightforward as it seems.

On a vaguely similar note, the shields in the Dune film (which are canonically supposed to work by filtering out fast moving objects, but have to let air in; they're a similar sort of idea for an interface) have the best special effect in all film. IMO. :)

Dune is one of my favorite movies and I have been meaning to get the DVD out and watch it again.

Thanks and I'll watch out for the canonical shields. :D

I'd steal people's food as they go for a bite and laugh my ass off when they find they just took a bite of air and look around confused.

I'd first go to the Apple HQ and check out all the new unreleased prototypes, then I'd go to Monaco so I can drive all the cars and sail the yachts :P

Bring back Robert Downey Jr (with the hat). He/you looked so philosophical.

The avatar changes are making me dizzy but I do enjoy your blunt punchy posts.

I don't think I'd like to freeze time. I think it goes slow enough. I would however jump at the chance to time travel. I'd like to see the beginning and ends of the universe.

I'd do all the cool things Hiro does in Heros, like appear to disappear and then reappear someplace else.
