Ok, I saw a Kinks Appreciation Thread and a Johnny Depp Appreciation Thread. I figured I'd start The Doors appreciation thread.

I admit it. I'm 33. I'm too young to have ever seen a live concert, to have ever bought anything on vinyl, etc. And my Doors appreciation actually began about two years ago...oddly enough, after watching the 1991 Oliver Stone film (which is FULL of horrible inaccuracies...but that's a whole 'nother thread).

I actually had two CD's -- the debut album and waiting for the sun. But what got me started investigating further was watching the movie and asking questions in my mind. "Did this really happen?" "Was Jim Morrison really like this?" and so forth. So I started listening to the other albums. Checked out two books of Morrison's poetry from the library and read them -- twice (bought them, later). Read Ray Manzarek's book, The Essential Jim Morrison, and the Ben Fong Torres book (its an excellent book with interviews of the three remaining band members, their producer Paul Rothchild, quotes by Morrison from previous interviews, and interviews of Morrison's family). Densmore's and Patricia Keannely's books are next on my list. Watched some live performance footage both on DVD and YouTube. Bought the box set.

And I think I got into the music, inside it, trying to understand it. I'm sorry I did not listen more and become a fan sooner.

I'm waiting with baited breath for the new documentary to hit Columbus. I'm not sure if we'll get lucky or if hell will freeze over first -- I guess that depends on if there are enough Doors fans in a town that cares A LOT about sports (they love their Ohio State Buckeyes. I should add that I'm not originally from here).

So I opened this thread. I guess I'll begin with favourite albums and go from there. It's kind of hard for me to pick one, since each has a unique quality all its own. And I go through periods where a certain album will call to me. But I will say that Strange Days (the album that was expected to blow them off the charts but didn't) is my go-to favourite. Always.

Anyone? Bueller?

My dad loves The Doors, especially the song "Light My Fire". I agree with him that it's a great song. Gotta love that awesome keyboard solo. :)

I appreciate the doors. Not my favourite band, but they have great moments.

I really like the acting that Jim Morrison did on stage, to the song, 'Unknown Soldier'.

Yeah i was into The Doors in my teens. I love a good keyboard solo. Probably Riders on the Storm is my fave, I always remember it on a hot summer's drive when I was a kid and these dark clouds were rolling in and I saw this Indian shaman on the side of the road.

I don't know about favorite album, but Shaman's Blues is an excellent song.

I actually have one of the books, No One Gets Out of Here Alive, but I haven't touched it yet.

Mine too. I seem to keep returning to that song no matter what. There is *so much* buried inside of this, both sonically and lyrically. Plus the live performances of that (and many other songs) are absolutely electrifying.

I had this one in my head all day today. Dig that fuzz tone. Sounds like someone playing an electric shaver.

No shout for 'The End' yet? I know it's become a bit of a cliche, but it is amazing. I listened to it over and over as a 14 year old.

Actually, that piece of work is particularly stunning. I am amazed, just like with "When The Music's Over", at how MUCH it contains...moving from one lyrical block to another...the exploration of the Oedpidal..the chances this song took at this time in music history. Also, how "Indian" it sounds...Krieger's guitar playing an almost raga-like sequence.

I liked that movie about The Doors that was popular, in the early 90s that was by the same title. That movie was very well done.:D
