My preferred way to escape reality is pursuing my special interests (preferably while listening to great music.) At the risk of being serious for a moment, excessive use of drugs was one of the few bad things about the 60's which I can think of. Some of my favorite musical artists either died prematurely or were adversely affected by excessive drug use. They would often have an increase in creativity, followed by a decline in artistic quality.
On the other hand, there is some pretty funny comedy about drugs. Cheech and Chong are hard to resist. Its usually about marijuana instead of harder stuff. Hunter S. Thompson's "Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas" is the only thing that I can think of that is funny about excessive use of the harder stuff. He went so over the top, you have to think he wasn't serious.
