Is it finally time to buy a kindle at under $200?

I TRY to read ebooks from gutenburg and manybooks, but reading on a computer screen sucks!

iPad's better. Funnily enough, I typed "Kindle" into Google just now, and it came up with an iPad link. Even Google's going, "look mate, just get an iPad"

I wonder if they're on sale because they're going to be coming out with a new one...

There are pros and cons to both, but the iPad really wins out right now. I do like some of the kindle things though, like the screen, which seems easier for long reading sessions and that you can shop for books without having to be in a wifi area or anything. Still, though, iPad, I think. There is that kindle app for iPad which allows you to dim the screen.

Hm, maybe I'll just require both....yes, that's it. And maybe a Nook while I'm at it. Muhaha.

The iPad will kill the Kindle.

The only thing the Kindle has going for it is the eInk display, with I admit is easier on the eye, but if you're used to LCD screens the iPad won't present any significant problems anyway.

If he doesn't want to read them on a computer screen, an iPad is not going to be much different.

If I was willing to overpay for a ebook reader, I'd ALREADY have a kindle!

What's the energy consumption on a kindle like? I know, I could google.

Are you guys seriously supporting the iPad? It's a horrible choice for an ereader unless you want your eyes to hurt.

A kindle is also a bad choice, especially if you're looking to pirate or download books from other sources other than the Kindle store. I think the Nook or the Kobo are the best options at the moment.

Okay, you're gonna hafta explain this... The 3G nook costs more than a kindle now, and manybooks.net has literally thousands of free books in kindle format. As a matter of fact, free books from manybook.net is the main reason I want an ebook reader and kindle seems to foot the bill nicely.

How and why is the nook a better choice?

Because amazon can delete your books without your consent or knowledge. I wouldn't trust it over a nook. You can use a program called Calibre to convert within any format you choose, so formats are otherwise irrelevant. The just wi-fi nook is cheaper, I thought, and you get free content if you go into a B&N. I guess I just said it was better for pirating because I associate pirating with, y'know, not having your files taken away without your permission.

As for the Kobo, Kobo is considered the barebones ereader. It doesn't have a lot of features, but it comes with (100 I think?) ebooks already preloaded on it. It's also a lot cheaper. Another option is the sony ereader but I don't like it, the screen looks too small.

Does anyone know if the kindle or other similar devices can change the background colour of the books? I've considered getting one but I have to read with a green overlay because of suspected irlen syndrome. I highly doubt this is an option on the kindle etc. but I was wondering.

$300 computer = either a netbook or a very cheap laptop. Either way, the iPad will beat them. Netbooks are small cheap laptops with cramped keyboards and underpowered hardware, and cheap laptops are s**t - big netbooks hardware wise.

The iPad is not meant to replace your main computer, but to do what many people use their laptops for if they have them as secondary machines. For this, they are good. It has full-features office programs, games (try playing a decent game on a $300 laptop), music and movies, internet, e-mail, and it has lots of apps, many of which are specially optimised portals to news sources and the like - very useful things. On top of that, you can read books on it and the UI is very friendly.

I ask you, though, can you really do more than that on a $300 laptop anyway? Sure, it has a full OS on it, but the hardware of that laptop will be so slow that doing anything beyond the basics will be impractical.



Unless your eyes hurt everytime you use your computer, I fail to see your logic here. Do you sit watching TV for hours? Everyone does when they watch films, and do so just fine.
