So, my birthday begins in twenty minutes, technically it's already going on in other time zones. Anyway, if feels so... underwhelming. I don't know if it's just getting older or what, but every year my birthday seems less exciting or meaningful. All it's celebrating is another year of life (which I suppose is an achievement of sorts, but after years of depression I try to celebrate my life in small ways every day, so dedicating a day to it seems rather pointless). But I still feel like it should be a big deal, maybe it's just because there used to be parties and presents when I was younger, that we don't do anymore. Like my brother turned 25 this year, which I always thought was a big deal, and we didn't do anything special at all. Or even anything not special. That just seems wrong. There should have been cake at least, right?

It's also absurd because supposedly I'm 23 now but I feel about 10 years younger, and in some ways at least 30 years older. Maybe that's what put me off my birthday, it started telling me I was all these big number ages that I don't relate to at all.

Regardless of all this, I'm trying to think of something to do to mark the day, but the best I can come up with is putting myself through the torture of shoe shopping because I need some new shoes desperately. Not exactly a treat for my birthday, but I could pick up my free smoothie on the way home at least. :)

And then I will secretly wish that people will appear offering endless cake and presents and acting like I'm the most important person in the world. 8)

So yeah, I was just wondering what your thoughts are about birthdays. What do you do to celebrate (or not)?

When I was a kid I wanted presents but I am thankful that my Mom never did the BIG party thing. I dont like it when people make a big thing about my birthday. I like it quiet and no surprises.
I think just doing something nice....like dinner or even getting a pizza....or a smoothy :D sound good to me.

Use to be exciting. So many presents and everything seem colorful.

As a child, I had a lot of family and everything seemed out of a fairy tale. Now it's only stressful and something I don't look forward to.

Happy birthday, Samwise! :)

I used to have parties for my birthday when I was younger, but I have since outgrown them. My parents still like to take me to do things for my birthday. Usually they take me out to eat, and give me birthday money to spend on whatever I want. My birthdays are still fun.

you have enviably nice-sounding parents. my parents were too preoccupied for such, in general. i don't think they paid attention to their OWN birthdays either.
anyways, i learned that i should treat myself like clockwork, every new birthday that comes along- i treat myself by forcing myself to go out to a real restaurant to eat some real fine food instead of the canned and packaged survival rations i normally subsist on. then i will go to the waterfront and enjoy the breezy outdoorsy ambience. then i will call it a day.

That sounds nice--not about your parents, but about how you'd do everything by yourself. I'm sure if I could do everything by myself, then I'd have a lot more fun. I don't drive, though, and the city I currently reside in is not pedestrian-friendly.

when you move to a more pedestrian-friendly city like frisco or boston, with superior public transit, you may find yourself doing more exploring on foot. short of that, there is just no substitute for having a car and driving. where i live, i'd be a shut-in if it weren't for driving. there is simply nothing for miles around. to bicycle out here is suicidal [and simply dangerous most other places as well in america], as there are no sidewalks and no nighttime streetlighting and crazy bicyclist-hating drivers to boot. but i just don't have the big city complexity gene, so out in the sticks i will stay, until god calls me home.
and doing things by oneself is a mixed blessing, as sitting alone in a restaurant is often looked at askance by other restaurant patrons, and there have been more than a few places that refused service to me as they only served couples and families.

I love Birthdays, they're a celebration of the life that my mum gave me. :)

I don't celebrate Birthdays so it's nothing special to me. I might get a card or two.

Well my birthday actually turned out to be quite amazing, people really appeared out of nowhere. My friend, who I thought had completely drifted away and didn't like me anymore, called me and took me out to lunch. Then my brother came home and told me it was his vacation and we should hang out (I never get to hang out with my brother), so we went mini-golfing. Then my mom came home and we decided further mini-golfing was necessary, so we went with my brother and his girlfriend about 45 minutes away to a glow in the dark mini golf place, and afterwards went to a movie. It was pure craziness, I wasn't expecting any of it. I also learned that my brother's girlfriend thinks I'm awesome and would like to hang out. I've also wanted to hang out with her, we have a lot in common (including my one friend), so maybe I'll have another friend now. :)

I'm so exhausted though. I had just recovered from a day out of town with my mom and gramma last week, and I'm gonna have to hibernate for at least a week to recover from the events of yesterday. But it was fun.

Well, I'm excited for my next birthday (two months) because I'll be 18. :D
