Why does it seem that it is more socially acceptable for females of a certain age to act childish when it is not as acceptable for males to do so. Like an example would be if two females started to "play around" with each other (I don't mean in a sexual way but in a childish way) no one seems to mind but if two males did the same they are seen as "being gay". Or does "gay" mean the males act like females?

You don't hear people say to females "stop acting like lesbians!!"

People who are more in touch with their "inner child" usualy can interact with children easier. Since it is almost universally accepted that one of the main female roles is rearing children; childishness is seen as a possitive trait in females.

Conversely men who show childish behavior are seen as foolish and, unsuitable for the "bread winner" role society puts them in. This isn't to say that men never engage in childish behavor. They just do it in more socially exceptable ways.

Why is it childish for to women play around, or to men for that matter.

I'm not gay. And it was many years ago even back in grade 8 when I was playing around with a male classmate and people were like "stop acting so gay".

I'm sorry if you feel this way but I am just trying to address the issues of society. Like if I lived under Taliban rule in Afghanistan before the regime got toppled, I might make a thread titled "Why do women get beaten for exposing their face?"

Whenever I say or do something childlike, mom says "aww, you're so cute!" But when dad behaves like a child, she rolls her eyes and gets annoyed with him. I think it has to do with the fact that mom wants me to be her little girl forever, while she wants dad to be a mature breadwinner and problem-solver.

Thats because you're her daughter and your dad is her husband.

Yep! :) But it's not just my mom - other people find my childlike qualities endearing too. Did you know that in Japan, it's socially acceptable for women of any age to behave in childlike ways? Things like Hello Kitty, Hamtaro or even Spongebob are marketed towards grown women in addition to young children.

I don't think they would call it "childlike" in Japan if it is part of the culture. Even old women? I can picture it for adolescents though. And their behaviour would not be really childlike. Afterall, how can a country full of childlike people be productive and become an industrialized country? not that I'm saying that people from less developed countries are more childlike.

Um, no they're not. I'm a woman, so that erases "all" women right there. He's only asking questions to try and understand better.

I totally agree, although I think this will be fiercely contested.

lol. I refuse to act that way under any circumstances, I don't understand the intention behind it.

Sorry, I used a poor choice of words. I should have said, it's acceptable for them to have childlike interests instead of behavior. I'm not sure if elderly women have anything to do with that kind of thing, but I've read in numerous places that it's acceptable for adult women to enjoy things Westerners would market only towards children.

Interesting how I always thought you were male. This just reinforces how I need to look at everyone's profile to find out if they never said if they were male or female.
