8MB cache should only be for HDD's with the lowest capacity. Sorry about the rant, just speaking my mind.

Windows would take longer to format a big disk in the first place if it did a full format not a quick format.
8Mb cache should be enough to run XP without bother.
They put 8Mb cache on instead of something higher because it's cheaper, I expect, or simpler to do somehow. They don't care what use you intend for the disk, at any rate.
I think this linky implies the My Passport SE ones are the same as the laptop ones, that they are 5200RPM / 8Mb. They don't list the specs anywhere easy to find.
