In the process of growing, bark is frequently shed to make room for the new growth.

Well a piece was noticed lying around and someone decided to take the initiative to put it in the mulch pile where it can further serve a good and meaningful purpose for those who might require food for growth in the future. In nature, ones growth depends on another's sh*t.

Pretty much, yeap, and continually growing from the very worms that created it. In the cold times, it can provide heat for the deserving, provided it's not stirred up too much. Just an occasional pitch fork and a little water does wonders.
