Anyone live in New York?

I'm thinking of going to New York in December. Anyone who has been living there for sometime know if it's better to go before Christmas or during Christmas? And what (relatively cheap) hotel to stay in? And which places to go to? General tips on being a stranger on the holy land? etc. etc.
