That's Herpes simplex virus, almost definately HSV-1. The vast majority of people have it, but how much it actually affects them varies with their immune systems and other factors. It can't be cured, because the virus lays dormant in the nervous system when it's not outbreaking. However, you know the tingling sensation you get on the skin when a cold sore is about to appear? You can get a cream that prevents that happening. The sore is caused by the virus multiplying in the skin and destroying the cells as it sheds itself out of your body. If you get the cream and put it on the tingling area, it usually prevents the sores from appearing at all.
One other thing to note is that you shouldn't kiss people or give oral sex if you have a cold sore or are feeling the tingle. That's when the virus is contagious, and although HSV-2 is the strain of herpes that is normally the STD, people without HSV-1 antibodies are able to be infected with HSV-1 in the genital area.
