I don't mean the little creatures that hang out under magical bridges. I mean when it's used on the web.

Here is what Wikipedia says:

Quote:
In Internet slang, a troll is someone who posts inflammatory, extraneous, or off-topic messages in an online community, such as an online discussion forum, chat room, or blog, with the primary intent of provoking other users into a desired emotional response[1] or of otherwise disrupting normal on-topic discussion.[2] In addition to the offending poster, the noun troll can also refer to the provocative message itself, as in "that was an excellent troll you posted". While the term troll and its associated action trolling are primarily associated with Internet discourse, media attention in recent years has made such labels highly subjective, with trolling being used to describe intentionally provocative actions outside of an online context. For example, recent media accounts have used the term troll to describe "a person who defaces internet tribute sites with the aim of causing grief to families."

What tallyman said basically. I learned my definition on gamefaq's forums 7 years ago. To gamefaqs there is trolling/inciting flames and flaming. Flaming is the outright attacks, trolling is what leads up to people flaming.

Last I checked, a troll is an internet user who doesn't know her place. So if you don't have a penis, you really ought to watch what you say to a man lest you be called a troll.

Troll also seems to mean having different opinions than other people.
Troll also seems to mean if you have poor spelling and grammar.
Troll also seems to mean if you read posts wrong or didn't understand what you've just read so your response to it was not on topic and totally irrelevant.
Troll also seems to mean if you have offended people with what you've just asked or ranted about.

Any use which strays too far away from the meaning TallyMan/Wikipedia has provided us is merely an abuse of terminology.
