I would rather not talk about my meltdowns, but the longest was an entire day.

Mine usually last 10 - 20 minutes.

Most of my meltdowns have lasted several hours and sometimes I have to sleep; but the worst (in terms of duration) lasted from a Friday afternoon to a Sunday night even though I slept on Friday and Saturday night; it just continued through the day.

It was externalised at first, but after that most of it was happening on the inside, as I was trying to not do things that would make the conflict worse. It was one very very very long overload session triggered by an emotional thing that happened at work at about 3 on the Friday (although I was very tense already before it happened).

My birthday party was on the Sunday and my brain was feeling horrible. I made a speech but I couldn't stand still (I was actually sort of writhing/stimming). The speech was coherent but I was twisting about so much that one of my friends commented on it, and said he hoped I didn't do that in front of my students. I think people thought I was very nervous about the speech, but I wasn't (I am used to speaking in public).

On the way back I couldn't drive, I was too exhausted. It had not been a raucus party, just dinner and a movie in a restaurant which specialises in that. My former husband drove the car and a friend sat in the front with him while I lay on the back seat.

As I was lying there I received a comforting SMS relating to the Friday conflict, and I begain to recover gradually (emotionally anyway; but I was completely exhausted), and was more or less OK by the Monday.

My meltdowns are sparked by anxiety, anger or fear. The most public meltdown I have ever had, was when I was about to recieve an injection (I am terrified of needles) and I started screaming in the reception room.

Some people I know cause me to have a meltdown because they just don't seem to understand and it just feels like I'm talking to him through a brick wall.

(it isn't more of a meltdown, but it feels more of frustration).

Most of my meltdowns last from 10 - 20 minutes, though there have been a few that lasted an hour or more and one that lasted about 5 minutes or less.

My meltdowns are caused by things like people coming over to visit at the house, people saying bad things about my religion, getting criticized on a drawing, my mom having to work on a day when she was originally supposed to be off and having a period. Though I'm sure that last one isn't a trigger that's exclusive to aspie women because it seems to happen to NT women as well.

I agree to the latter statement, IdahoRose.

The post office yesterday. It was horrible. Too many people in a line that wasn't moving. So convoluted and typical. It felt like they were all closing in on me so I went outside and started screaming. By the time I was home I couldn't even form a complete sentence.

When I was younger I could withdraw into myself for days at a time.

People putting words in my mouth and presuming that I have no feelings for members of my WrongPlanet family causes me to have a meltdown, because 90% of the time, it feels as though you are the only family that I've got, and I'm very sensitive. I cry out my soft, brown eyes and pull myself together, again.

So, if this is what a Meltdown is, this means I have meltdowns often, then.

For me, a meltdown is when I become overwhelmed with a negative emotion - such as sadness or anger, or fear - and it causes me to cry for a little while since I don't know how to express these emotions in any other way. Often, the primary emotion I feel is accompanied by feelings of frustration and helplessness caused by my inability to cope and change the situation.

I should note that my meltdowns have become much less frequent ever since I began staying up all night and sleeping in the afternoon.
