Well, here is a thread for those to post about those "interesting" branches in their family trees.

As for my own...

Amelia Earhart - 3rd cousin twice removed on fathers side
William Ecker - Sergeant in Company H of 11th Pennsylvania Calvary
During civil war. On my fathers side.

Still going through my family tree stuff, so If I find other very interesting tidbits, Ill post em.

Oh, fun thread. :)

My mother's descended from King James IV of Scotland and Pocahontas.

My dad's side is from the lineage of the Hawaiian god of thunder.

Genealogy is a great deal of fun; I've not found any famous ancestors, but quite a few who did well with extremely limited resources. In fact, their strong belief in the value of life, any life, is humbling and overwhelming.

My understanding is that if you want famous ancestors, you just have to go back far enough. As you travel back through the generations, the number of your potential ancestors exceeds the number of people alive on earth, and you can safely assume you are descended from each one of them several times over. Julius Caesar? Check. Confucius? Check. Ancient history becomes more interesting when you realize it is not just a human story, but the story of your own family.

- My great uncle married a Mexican woman who was famous in her home country.
- My grandfather's cousin was a WWII flying ace.
- My mom's cousin's husband played at CBGB's.

Judy Garland was a cousin to my grandfather on my father's side.
I have a great-uncle on my mother's side who was a WWI veteran. He died young from pneumonia due to complications from the effects of chemical warfare.
My great-grandfather was almost drafted into the Yankees. He would have played with Babe Ruth. He and my other grandfather were both Golden Glove boxers.

I always wished I knew more about my family history. Unfortunately, I only know back to my great grandparents. The most interesting person among them was my great grandfather, who was a gypsy who moved to America to escape the Nazis. My grandmother says that I am very much his great granddaughter, and that this explains my wandersome proclivities.

Descendant of Brigham Young (great-great-great-great-great granddaughter), then my mom's aunt traced some royal British blood back to the 1100s or so. That's all that I know of for relatively famous/important people.
