Peanuts have a lot of fat which makes me nervous. I am not overweight.

Peanuts taste too good to be healthy for you.

Someone told me that peanuts are definitely better for you than tortilla chips. I am not sure this is true though with the high fat content in peanuts.

the fat used to make the chips is probably more likely to stick to your arteries.
The salt in the chips is probably more likely to harden your arteries.

Go for the peanuts.

Or try roasted chick peas (or pumpkin seeds)

But as for an straight answer; nuts better than corn, any day.

Eating a pound of peanuts in one sitting isn't going to make you any healthier than eating a pound of tortilla chips in one sitting.

Eat sensibly (and exercise regularly) and you won't have to worry about anything sticking to your arteries.

P.S. Whoever told you peanuts are definitely healthier than tortilla chips either lied or didn't know what he/she was talking about.

Peanuts are legumes, despite the name (not nuts). That doesn't negate your point at all, though. Peanuts contain both protein and fiber, and their fats are the healthy kind which are good for your cardiovascular system (mono- and poly-unsaturateds). There may be other benefits that I'm not aware of. I'm no peanut expert.

Tortilla chips, on the other hand, are usually relatively high in unhealthy fat (saturated) and as well as sodium.

I'm inclined to agree with this.

I don't know about healthy, but I recently discovered tortilla chips dipped in crunchy peanut butter is the s**t. Great high energy snack before you go and exercise.

Both are high in fat. Peanuts, while may having more fat, have "good" fats and higher protein content. Tortilla chips often have saturated fats, (hidden) trans fats, sodium, and really nothing in the way of vitamin content or protein.

Go for the peanuts, but don't over-indulge. But that isn't to say all tortilla chips are bad for you. I get some at a health food store and eat them on occasion in combination with other foods -- they are no salt added and are rather basic and plain. You could also purchase peanuts that are very high in added sodium.

Lesson: read labels, follow servings.

Peanuts would be the better choice.

Peanuts are healthier (and will keep you going for longer) even if they're higher in fat, but it's 'good' fat and it's hard to eat that many anyway coz they're filling.

Unsalted peanuts are healthier for you in small quantities. The recommended amount is a handful a day. Too much of anything isn't good for you.

Peanuts win hands down. There are a lot of things that are good for you in peanuts, proteins and unsaturated fats included while with chips you only get fried saturated fat, salt and some carbohydrates.
You might want to be careful with salt though, as other members said before me.

You can buy tortilla chips that aren't made oily. Peanuts by the handful are okay, but more than that can mess with your digestion. And try tortilla chips with PB. Really tasty snack.
