I really dislike that cattle trader in our village...

This is just something I need to get off my chest, because it's been annoying me for years now!
There is a cattle trader in our village and he is not treating his animals well. Basically he buys cattle, keeps them in his stable for a short time and sells them off again. Basically, it's an okay way to make a living AS LONG AS you treat those animals halfways decently.
Now, this man, he doesn't. Sometimes he will load his cows into a truck in the evening and let them stay there scooped up all night before the truck finally leaves in the morning. That is just cruel, I think, because the poor cows can't move properly, have no feed and no water and are certainly scared about the situation.
There are worse things happening, like some years back around Easter. It was a really cold spring and he had one of his pregnant cows on a meadow just across the street from the house where he lives. The cow finally gave birth to her calf amid the last remains of the winter snows and the calf looked rather weak. It just lay on the ground all the time and didn't get up. The cattle dealer MUST have seen the calf, because I could see him scurrying about between the house and the stable doing whatever he thought was more important at the moment. I know that some neighbours phoned him about the calf, but still nothing happened. To cut a long story short, after several hours he got the calf off the meadow - in a wheelbarrow. Obviously the poor thing froze to death because this cold-hearted man simply didn't care.
He also keeps a dog that is to watch the stables so that noone can steal cows or whatever. That dog is kept on a chain 24/7 all year long. It can lay down in the stable, where it is at least decently warm in winter, and it gets its feed, but that is about all. Today, I have heard that dog barking all day AGAIN. It happens on a regular basis. The poor dog barks in a way that says "Somebody please spend some time with me!", but the only thing that happens that every now and then is that the dog yelps and is then silent for a while. Obviusly the poor creature is getting kicked for wanting a little love.
All this makes me sooooo sad. It's okay to trade with animals, I can even understand people who want to eat meat, I do so myself after all. But still, I think that every creature deserves to be treated with a little respect.
This man even has had a court tell him that he mustn't keep dogs anymore because he doesn't look after them properly and he still has such a poor little thing on his farm. One of his former dogs was even stolen by animal rights activists, but the cattle trader just doesn't give a damn about it. Village rumour has it that he has bribed quite a lot of people so they will turn a blind eye on what is going on there.
I just wish I could do something for those poor animals, but I can't think of anything that has not been tried in the past...

Call the authorities! there was some guy abusing horses awhile back at my moms old house
and i about wanted to commit murder. horses are cute as all hell and just want to be loved!
This guy was a typical jerkoff and was a real piece of work. somebody finally did something about it and he had to move out of the area he was so uncivilized.
once when i was wlking, i accidently touched his yard with my foot and he said if i did that again he would let loose his dogs to attack me!
i dont know why people abuse ANYTHING. i mean FFS!

*sigh* I appreciate your proposal, I really do, but the authorities have already taken a look at this whole mess (repeatedly) AND they have had this guy pay fines, but more has not happened yet. As I said, he has most likely bribed everyone involved in politics round here...
I wish there was some legal action left that has not yet been exhausted. But I cannot think of anything...

Has anyone tried talking to him without insulting him or calling the police? Maybe, showing him a way where he can profit by treating his animals better. Farming is extremely hard work with small profit margins. Sadly, most of those who raise animals view them more as property than as living creatures. It doesn't sound to me like any laws were broken from your writing. He probably sees the lose of a calve as a financial hit to his bottom line. I have seen both sides of this issue and things aren't as always clear as they seem. Treating dogs badly is wrong and he should be fined. I still would recommend getting a group of people together and asking him for some of his time to explain your concerns in a friendly, professional manner. If he is being abusive to his animals then look to document it with pictures and reports. You're more likely to get somewhere if you treat the guy decently than with trading insults in my experience.

Yes, maybe we should give talking another shot. I seem to have somehow forgotten about that possibility. Maybe it's just because everyone else in the village seems to accept that the situation cannot be changed after (at least) 25 years that this sh** has been going on. I will try to talk about some others in the village to see if there is any kind of support for this.
And I was not trying to bash farmers in general, but with this man (who is just a trader, by the way, he doesn't raise cattle or keep them for longer than neccessary) I just can't understand why he is behaving the way he is. My own grandfather used to run an old-fashioned little farm with a handfull of cows, some chickens and some potato fields. I know it is hard work and that farmers cannot cuddle their animals all day. But the things that happen around here just don't seem to serve any sensible purpose.
I personally would rather get up half an hour earlier than have the poor cows squeezed into a truck all night...
