Am I the only one who hates Thanksgiving?

Thanksgiving is coming soon here in America. My Mom is going grocery shopping for food to prepare for when my family comes to visit.

The good thing about Thanksgiving is all the delicous food like turkey, baked ham, and peacan pie. But the bad things is that I'm always reminded of what it represents.

People see Thanksgiving as a picture of happy pilgrims sitting next to happy native americans eating a big feast and getting along, but it's a hypocritical image in my opinion. The pilgrims really did terrible things to the Native Americans shortly after arriving and taking over the country that rightfully belonged to them. They either cheated them out of their land or took it by force, forced them to give up their traditions and religions and convert to Christanity just because their ways were viewed as "savage", and even after the Native Americans worked hard to prove themselves worthy of being accepted as American citizens (in their own land), most of them were killed off or forced to move away. Now the few left live on Indian Reservations in crappy mobile homes and are still treated as second class citizens.

I just think it's really upsetting to celibrate this holiday knowing what it represents, but my family wouldn't understand it. So I take part in the holiday just for the food, not for the holiday itself as I find it highly offensive.

If you watch The Addams Family Values, the scene where Wednesday and Pugsly do a Thanksgiving Play shows just exactly what I think about the holiday. I wish I could post it on here but YouTube's videos of it suck. :P

I doubt the turkeys much care for it. :D

I imagine many holidays are based on something unjust or morbid. I don't think that should ruin the current meaning, but most should be made more aware of the .real meaning.

Thanksgiving for me was for large family gatherings, either mine or somebody elses. They seem fake and forced to me. I got into the habit of working on Thanksgiving and Christmas there for a while. Now I feel like I am more a cross between a black sheep and people feeling sorry for me because of this whole A.S. things and lack of close relationships in my life. I usually humor them for a couple of hours then make my way for the door.

I've just celebrated Thanksgiving about a month ago, and I don't really care about it, because it reminds me of last year's Thanksgiving, in 2009. Everything came out in the open between my mum and I, last Thanksgiving weekend.

Oh yeah, those poor turkeys!

I guess for the meanwhile I'll humor my family too by celibrating it, because they really look forward to it. However once I'm old and out of the house I won't be actively celibrating it.

Another problem I have is with Halloween. I used to love Halloween, and still do. However lately all the Christains have been trying to convince people it's a Satanist's holiday just because of it's connection to paganism who they're still convinced were a bunch of satan-worshipping witches. So a lot of places have banned Halloween and switched to those lame Fall Festivals. I remember how mad I used to be when my school banned Halloween-themed decorations and we were told we were treating it as "any other day". So much for not letting religion interfer with school.

Anyways Halloween just isn't worth celibrating anymore as much as it used to.

We Creedonians celebrate Thanksgiving in November, although to me it is a bad day; because back in 1889 I found out my wife was having a nice little tryst on the side with my best friend. We divorced on the following Monday.

When my grandfather died, we buried him on Thanksgiving. Oh, geez, I remember such parts of it.

A death on a holiday shouldn't happen :(

Halloween was a favorite of mine. I don't know why everything has to meet some religious standard of acceptance. Halloween is about kids being kids, and um, adults being naughty. The 4th of July was really one of favorites too. Not because I am flag waving patriot, but because we used to go out in the middle of nowhere and eat picnic food and sweets all day and set off fireworks. It was also really the first time I got to make out with a girl. :)

No. It's a waste of food and it is gluttony. It's also a noise-generator with all the people at a table at once talking, and having to cook. I'm an extreme picky eater and never was able to eat the meal anyway, so had to make my own.

i don't like it. any group meals .. especially where people are inclined to say grace, which really rubs me the wrong way. it's just so awkward. and i can't eat anything people typically serve at Thanksgiving.

i don't really care for holidays much (except Halloween, under the right circumstances), nor anything ceremonial: weddings, graduations, anything like that.

What's the whole idea behind thanksgiving anyway? How did it all start? I'm an English noob.
It's just the same as Christmas, why would you want 2 Christmases? I think just the one is fine.

Sorry to hear about the death of your grandfather. Was he ill? My grandfather died Nov 5 2008. So Thanksgiving that year was very hard and still is. Friday was 2 years that he passed and I was so depressed. I still have days where I miss him especially around Nov and Dec. He was so sick for 4 years. So Thanksgiving for me has changed a lot since he died. I still go to New Jersey to visit dad's family but this year my parents and I are staying home and possibly going to a restaurant. Or dad may cook. Usually we go to New Jersey and my uncle does the Thanksgiving dinner at his place.

About 2 Christmases. We do celebrate it twice. Christmas Eve we all get together at my aunt's house. Christmas Day, my parents, my grandmother and I all go to church service then go to to my uncle's house. We have been doing this for a long time. Plus my birthday is around Christmas time too. So I guess 3 holidays at once?

He was sick for quite a while. He didn't die on Thanksgiving, but that's when we buried him.

Were you emotional at the funeral? I couldn't contain myself when my grandfather died. I never had a chance to say good bye to him either. I miss him so much. Have you gone to grief support group? I'm going this weekend.

I'm fairly apathetic towards it because I've never celebrated it.
