What should I do if I find a large caliber bullet at a local elementary school in a town where discharging a firearm is prohibited?

Just notify the principal and let him talk to the police first. A kid might of dropped it there. If you touched and handled it, they can't really get any prints but yours off of it. Maybe it's important, maybe not.

I wouldn't worry about it, by itself it's meaningless. For all we know, a kid brought it in for show and tell and dropped it outside.

If it was brought in for show and tell they'd be expelled for bringing a deadly weapon to school. And their family would probably be arrested for terrorism.

It may have been there before the school was constructed. If it was part of a shooting there, the cops have techniques for finding that.

If someone discharged a firearm in an area where firing guns is prohibited then you would figure it will be noticed by everyone in earshot. The cops would have been all over that area not to mention it being on all of your local news channels. Wass the brass shiney or does it looked weathered? If its shiney then it was rescent if it looks weathered then it may have been their for decades.

If I was you I would not pick any fights with the kids from that school the little brats are packing guns with suppressors.

Notifying the school and police will only scare parents and take police away from doing their jobs protecting the public. While they are standing around trying to figure out where it came from or patroling the school grounds crimes could be prevented. There is no need to act like chicken little. The school might over react hiring more security guards, metal detectors, and god knows what, that money would better spent on academics or school lunches not acting like big brother. Probably some kid found it somewhere else and brought it to school.

Things happen all the time on school property when school is out. No doubt the principal would be able to tell if the brass is old or new and if it was important enough to contact the police. The fact is, we don't know where it came from good or bad and if more brass was already found on the school property. As I stated in my comment before, a kid might of dropped it there. I hardly think that's acting like chicken little.

My concern is with money that could have went to education will be diverted to security because of a single bit of discarded brass that most likely was fired some place else. People have tendency to over react when children are involved.

I understand what you mean and you have a good point. I was thinking of the safety of the children as well by from a different perspective. I feel it was probably something a kid drop there, I know my son use to like to collect and play with things like that.
