I havent thought about it since finding AS
Is this an Aspie thing
I could hang out with a dog all day
I do get wierd around them like people sometimes
Where I dont want to be bothered
But I could hurt a person way before an animal
And I dont think I could hurt a person

Many people on the spectrum find that they can relate to animals more easily than to people. I often feel like that myself, especially about our family dog.

The great thing about animals is (in my eyes) that they are not people and that they don't behave like people and that they don't have the same kinds of expectations that many people have. An animal accepts you the way you are or it doesn't. An animal doesn't sweettalk and sugarcoat things. They are completely honest (except some special cases like monkeys or crows hiding food from other members of their species). Also, you don't have to talk to an animal to make it like you.

I find it much easier to accept an animal. I like being around them. Of course, a large dog or a medium-sized horse could seriously injure or even kill me, but as long as I don't give them a reason to, I can be reasonably certain that they won't. Humans on the other hand play false a good part of the time and that makes it more difficult to trust them.

I feed the squirrels and birds. It's a mutual trust where I can feed them from my hand if I wanted. I think building the relationship takes time, but also you know what to expect in it.. emotions don't complicate things and it's easier to be natural.

My dogs are the most important things in my life.

I feel more relaxed around animals than people.

When I was a child I pretended to be a dog literally all the time. When I was playing with the other children at school I was always the dog, while the other was things like father, mother, child, ect.

I think it was a way for me to fit in, feel more secure, and not mess up. I was really good at being a dog

I'm very close to all 5 of my dogs and my cat. I also love animals and am pursuing a degree in marine biology once I get into college next year.

The thing I love about animals is that they're simple and don't need to be impressed. They don't judge you like people do. And so I can talk or stare my pets in the eyes without anxiety or fear.

Right now, 4 of my dogs are keeping me company as I recover from fever and strep throat.

You made me realize it
You dont have to play games
Just play
Its the game that depresses me
I just never realized I dont play mind games with dogs
No rules of etiquette
No silly nonsensical rules of interaction
Just pure attention
Love

I also prefer dogs to people. I can be with my dog for days. I can only handle talking to people for a few hours.

I'm pretty attached to my cats. I feel secure with them, while with people, it's just so worrisome. Cats don't judge you either. I find cat facial expressions easier to read as well.

Being closer to animals is not just an Aspie thing. I use forums on a site for mental illnesses in general & lots of people there feel the same way. I think it has to do with problems fitting in, being accepted, & understanding normal people. Animals are a lot easier for us to deal with. They don't bully us, don't lie to us, don't betray us ect. It's much easier to please an animal than people usually. I used to like animals more when I was little but I got out of it; my interest changed but I still like em deep down. If I were in a relationship with someone who loved em; I would be into em a lot more; I would prefer a big animal lover for that reason.

I cried way more for the death of my cat than the death of any family members.
