I'm looking to make a floating desk.

Best I can figure is to get a new or used kitchen counter and attach it to the wall using french cleats or metal brackets of some kind.

thoughts?

Make sure that the wall can handle the collective weight of whatever you put on it, or else it will end up in your lap, and (most likely) a huge hole in your wall. -- consider the weight of yourself as well if you happen to fall asleep at your desk, the desk will essentially work as a large lever on whatever you mount it to the wall with.

so, both kinds or brackets?

I'll also talk to the people at Lowes to see what advise they have to offer.
