Thinking of a response for something someone asked you, has anyone ever responded with the phrase 'don't hurt yourself'? Just something i had on my mind because I am wondering if that possible, can someone really hurt them self by thought?

What are all of your thoughts on this?

I suppose that's probably an attempt at humor or banter; hurting oneself with thought? Not physically, but it is certainly possible. Maybe thinking about self-defeating concepts or ideas constitutes self harm if it results in depression?

Yeah in that way it could certainly be harmful, but yeah I just wonder why people say that and what exactly they are implying.....I just find it a funny phrase to be applied to such a situation.

Me too.. the kind of random humor most NTs exhibit is a bit confusing sometimes. I guess a statement like 'don't hurt yourself' is just a mock friendly attempt. I've learned a lot of communication with people is just banter where you tease each other. I think it puts many NTs at ease if they can make fun of someone in a friendly way and the person reciprocates in kind

Well yeah usually people say it as a joke, and even I find it funny...but still simple things like that get me thinking, about the true meaning of things.

When I'm in deep thought, I don't hear what the other person says the first time.

They're saying "don't hurt yourself" because they're being sarcastic because you can't really hurt yourself while thinking, but they say that because you're making a face that looks like you're straining. Alternatively, they may consider you to be "stupid" and so when they see you thinking, they are sarcastically saying "don't hurt yourself" because they think that if you think too hard, your brain will explode or something.

Either way, whoever said that was being a jerk.
