Not to be confused with the Sept 16 "Mexican Independence Day" when Mexico kicked off their war of Independence from Spain in 1810... the Fifth of May celebrates the victory by Mexico over the invading French Army at the Battle of Puebla in 1862. The French, under Napoleon III, were trying to build a French empire in Mexico.

Independence Day is bigger in Mexico itself. The fifth of may is an ethnic thing bigger in the US. And its pushed by the beer companies.

Yes. Its a tradition Mexican folk song from Veracruz...maybe centuries old.

Richie Valens made it into great rocknroll in the Fifties, and Los Lobos did a great version in the eighties for the biographical movie about Valens.
