The reason I get angry about the issue of adoption is because I can't make it into a good story.

There. I said it. Nasty as it sounds, its the truth.

Good story?

Here's a good story.....

An American Registered Nurse adopted a seven-year-old Russian orphan.

After six months, she put him on a plane for Moscow, by himself, with an explanatory note pinned to his sweater.

She addressed the note "To whom it may concern" and wrote about behavior problems and requested that the adoption be cancelled.

True.

Her name is Torry Hansen, and the boy is Artyom Savelyev, if you want to Google it.

You could write any number of versions of this.......many people would believe that it was fiction!

For some reason that story makes me mad. :?

I see what you did there, Sylkat.

I find that most adoption-related fiction fits in two categories: "Baskets" and "Bastards". "Baskets" are glamorized portrayals, bordering on the melodramatic, with idealistic approaches to the material. "Bastards"... yeah. You get the idea. The problem with these two categories, however, is that they're both unrealistic.

Dear GiftorCurse,

I think you can do something very creative with the concept of a baby or child of unknown origen or potential taken into an unsuspecting home.

Look at what Zenna Henderson did wit the idea!

There are possibilities there, just start writing and see what ideas come to you!

Meh,

I find changeling stories to be a bit overdone. I'd have to do something special with the formula.

^Of course. Just don't expect it to sell.

Let's face it, guys; in this cynical world, everyone finds drama and sleaze more entertaining than normality. Why do you think James Patterson and countless romance novels such a hit on the bookshelves? You know the saying: "If it bleeds, it leads." It's as if society is brainwashing itself into committing a slow suicide by bringing out the worst in human nature. If Frank Capra were making movies today, they would be critical and commercial busts while Michael Bay rakes in the dough.

You also have to look out for special interest groups. If I wrote an ultra-dark novel on adoption, the adoption advocates go apesh*t. Same case with pro-choice folk if I wrote a pro-adoption book.

A creator is not defined by his/her creations.

There are two awesome movies about adoptions/foster care gone awry:

Mommie Dearest (child abuse/adoption)
Good Will Hunting (child abuse/foster care/Reactive Attachment Disorder)

Thanks, but no thanks. I find child abuse and adoption combined to be a nasty thing.

Never cared much for her. The cynic in me says that, like Joan, she "thought it was good for publicity."

That has been my thoughts on her as well. Especially to distract attention away from her numerous other personal moral failings.

An unfortunate truth a lot of pro-lifers keep in the closet is the fact that quite a few adoptive parents have failings like Angelina.
