Birthday Gifts

I'm old enough that I rarely get birthday gifts any more, but I have a birthday coming up soon and I received an early birthday gift today.

It is a paperback copy of Giovanni Boccaccio's The Decameron.

I think my sister has a higher opinion than I of my ability to read those little tiny words.

Sometimes I wonder if people are really buying for themselves when they buy gifts for their family members.

In this case, we were talking about The Decameron a couple of weeks ago.

In March, 1963, Jean Shepherd talked about the book on his radio show and I had just listened to it. In the radio show, he was talking about when he was in 6th grade and how he found the book in his father's room so he read it. And then he wrote a book report over it for school. The school teacher was very surprised and questioned him about it and made him promise not to read any more of his father's books.

I found it on-line as part of Project Gutenberg. If I read it, I'll probably read it there since I can adjust the font size to what is comfortable for me. So I was surprised when I opened the envelope from Amazon.com and found it.

It's not actually for another couple of weeks, though. It's on the same day of the year as Jennifer Lawrence, Princess Anne, Julia Childs, and Napolean Bonaparte's birthdays.

I, personally, NEVER get any birthday presents from my mom because I already have everything I could potentially need - those are my contest winnings because i love entering online contests For example I won a book on the Sumerian mythology on the occassion of my birthday in January 27

We usually don't bother with gifts, but a couple of years ago, I gave my younger brother a couple of Jan van Haasteren puzzles which he really likes.

The idea was that by buying both at the same time, I got free shipping from Amazon. Also, as much as he smokes, I didn't know if he would be around by Christmas (fortunately, he's still here), so I gave him both puzzles on his birthday.
