I thought as we are all from different places around the world, and as many of us enjoy languages, it might be interesting to try a thread sharing our local dialects such as common phrases or sayings, and a little information on our local accents. The idea came to me after watching a video of hale_bopp (the kitty video =^_^=) and my boyfriend commenting that he somehow knew what her accent would be before he had heard her speak.

Technically speaking I am a Geordie - from Newcastle, North East England - although I don't tend to define myself as one that often and don't have a strong Geordie accent, but apparently have a far stronger accent then I realise. The dialect interests me because it sounds so totally foreign when you hear it from someone who speaks broad Geordie, and I also like that our accent is quite guttural, similar to that of a German accent...after only a few months/years it's almost impossible to tell a German from a fellow Geordie.

A nice non-threatening Geordie as an example, Mr Ross Noble :heart: (long hair) and Mr Alexander Armstrong;

Geordie: Wey aye
English: Yes, or general enthusiastic agreement.

Geordie: Y'areet, hinny?
English: Are you all right, darling?

Geordie: Ahm gannin hyem (my personal favourite)
English: I'm going home

Geordie: Ye knaa what ah mean leik.
English: Do you know what I mean?

Geordie: Divn't
English: Don't

I talk in a central Lancashire accent. So something (vaguely) similar might be someone like Peter Kay.

Or, perhaps, Jim Bowen (I briefly saw him in his local!):

…in fact, I speak more like that than Peter Kay.

Although I live in a major metropolitan area in north Texas, there are a lot of people in the area who have a sort of country drawl. Still, there's a lot of people who don't. Arlington in many ways is a mesh up of different kinds of people.

Here's a video of people at Six Flags Over Texas - which is in Arlington. It was Gay Day that day, so I hope nobody minds. :roll:

I'm torn in half here. Do I post a BC one, or that video that I like so much?

Got a webcam? If not, you need a webcam and then you can upload what you've filmed to youtube. Oh maybe you can film it on a mobile phone and then transfer it via a usb cable to your computer and then upload it to youtube. :lol:

It could be complicated.

My accent is Stopfordian but since I live near Manchester I guess I can show you how people sound.

Gordon/Wythenshawe accents put things like -AUH (pronounced like an orgasmic ah! but lower toned) at the end of things like Air Freshen-auh, an example would be on Shameless.

Rochdale accents tend to drag the words in a nasely manner. Coronation Streets Janice is from Rochdale.

Stockport (where I'm from), sounds pretty neutral if I do say so myself....the guy in Two Pints of Lager and a Packet of Chrisp (Gary) is pretty much our voice.

First voice is Gary

@CockneyRebel: When I think of Cockney I think of Del Boy and Harry Redknapp.

@Tequila: You from Bolton 8O !?!

I'm confused. Are you naturally a cockney, or have you taught yourself to speak that way because of your love for Mick Avory?

Does having a New Jersey accent from the U.S count? I have honestly never seen so many Brits before as I have on this site.
