I've enjoyed watching the Royal Wedding, and have been a bit perplexed watching the tweets go by on my twitter feed. It seems to be the norm now to be cynical about royalty, to see the Royal Wedding as something that costs the country lots of money and reinforces the serfdom of the masses

What do you think about royalty? If you are British, would you be glad for us to become a republic? If you are left wing, does it mean you have to be anti monarchy? If you are not British, do you think the Royal family is something to be proud of, or something to get rid of?

I could have put this in PPR, but I have a good idea what most of the folk in there would say. I'd like a broader range of opinions.

I'm not British, and I don't really care either way. I sort of just view them as any other celebrities that I don't care about.

That's interesting that you see them as celebrities though. I guess I don't follow them in the papers and magazines, and I'm not into the cult of celebrity at all. But it seems so fashionable to be against the monarchy, and to talk down this country. Patriotism is frowned upon quite a lot. Are you American? It seems much more acceptable, or even required, to be patriotic over there. Everyone just seems to see everything so negatively over here. Its wearing.

i could not care any less about the wedding situation. i have not one iota of interest in either of them.

it is surprising to see the influence those 2 have on people at large. everyone seems to displace their own selves and transplant it with adulation for the "royal couple".

people are turning up at the crack of dawn in a drizzly and cold london and traveling miserably to get there to witness 2 "standard issue" people getting married. neither he or she is eminent in any other way than they are "famous" and are in line to lounge on the "throne".

i have no interest in that insanity that i see as i flip through all the channels festooned with coverage of the royal knot tie.

thankfully i am not very interested in TV, so i did not feel ripped off by the usurpation of the bandwidth by the royal clap trap.

i did my own thing today, and cathy and bill did theirs, and and i am quite content without knowing what they did.

Are you patriotic about Australia? Or does patriotism seem irrelevant to you.

i wear no medals because i have none. if i did have medals i would not wear them either.
to walk with a display of regalia on my chest that speaks louder than me, is to admit to those who are competent of thought, that "that" is all i aspired to be. (rhymes in a funny old way actually).

i do not want any medals thanks.

So everyone so far seems to be republican. Or just not interested either way.

Its interesting to me, as I do feel some connection to William. This is probably completely artificial. But I was a young child when his mother married, and when he was born. I remember when his mother died, and watching him and his brother walking the funeral. I am pleased that he is happy now, as he has so much sadness early on in his life. Plus he does do good for this country, he is a search and rescue helicopter pilot.

I don't normally follow the goings on of the royal family. But I am pleased to see him happy. I am also pleased to see people lining the streets looking happy. Although it seems that as someone who tends to be left wing, I shouldnt feel this way. This confuses me, I wonder if I actually am left wing. Maybe I'm a closet tory, who just hasn't realised it yet.

I can understand if you are republican, especially somewhere in the commonwealth, and you really dislike royalty, that this wedding must be very annoying.

i am not patriotic about australia, but i like living here, and i hope it does not change too much.

what is patriotism anyway? it is i guess some sort of paternal instinct to preserve the purity of one's homeland. whatever. i just want to live in the bush with animals that love me, and i want to forget about the world of people in a way that is not complete and final.

patriotism is irrelevant to me because it is not in my nature.

I think it is different for different people. I feel patriotic, in that I wish people would stop talking my country down. I wish things wouldn't change so fast, I love the countryside and the rural ways of life. I don't like the way our cities are changing so much, and there seems to be a loss of community, of people caring about each other. Also, I feel connected to the past, much more than the present, to past ways of life. Its not about race. More about land and rurality and countryside.

As I see it, even politicians are celebrities. They have a public image to sell.

I am American, and it's true patriotism is pretty rampant over here. I've never really understood it myself. My parents seemed to be pretty patriotic, but they chose to live here and had to make a considerable effort to do so. I'm glad to live here, because it's actually probably one of the least likely places I'd personally run into racism (that is, towards me--they just have different targets here). But I'd be just as happy in Canada or the UK.

I can definitely relate to what you said about being connected to the past though.

I don't know them, so I'm not sure why people expect me to like or dislike them or want to watch them getting married.

I thought the wedding was lovely ! I noticed the floor panels in the Westminster Abbey were Masonic, same flooring in other establishments throughout the world.
