Is it just myself, or are we as a society being inundated by scents? I have noticed that when I pass people on the street, or in a store, that they reek of cloyingly sweet fabric softener, perfume, cologne, or all three! When I visit my physical therapists office, my clothing smells like whatever awful scented cleaning product they use to wipe down the table after each patient. I rode the medical van yesterday and had to change my blouse and wash when I got home, because some highly scented person had been using the seat belt before me, and got their smell all over it.

When I take a walk, I can smell fabric softener and laundry soap, coming from people's homes. When I borrow books from the library, they smell like perfume or some other overpowering odor. It seems that fresh air is a rare commodity indeed. Anyone else notice this?

My mum is obsessed with scents. She has a heated plate which is used to melt scented wax, and she buys candles and air fresheners every time she goes to the store. I actually enjoy the scents she buys, particularly because some of them remind me of my childhood.

My mum is a big fan of perfume, I can't stand it. It smells so strong and makes me sneeze. I'm not sure if she smells 'wack' tho...?

I like unperfumed everything. My house mainly smells of cats. Attractive I know.

I don't mind individuals using one or two drops of a good quality scent; I think of it as a component of dressing up. But when their clothes are already scented by their laundry detergent and the air freshener in their car and the room we both occupy has its own scent of mysterious origin, the overall impression is not scent but stink. I blame the proliferation of cheaply perfumed cleaning and houshold products.

I've been noticing the problem recently in the hallways of my condominium. I decided they can't have sprayed for bugs every day, which is what it seems like, so this must be an air freshener assault. Ah for the days when the janitor wiped everything down with PineSol on Monday morning, so the halls smelled fresh on Monday afternoons, and the rest of the week not at all.

What is it with women and their perfume? I can't stand the smell of perfume.

I'm more attracted to the smell of cats than the smell of perfume.

Some department stores put the perfume aisles next to the main entrance, so you have to walk through them. Just one of the reasons I avoid department stores.

I am extremely sensitive to 'scents' of the synthetic 'nothing is a llowed to smell like it really is' variety. My skin reacts badly to most of that stuff [shave creams, most soaps, shampoos, anti-perspirants, deodorants etc...] and I find air/room deodorisers generally make my eyes water, nose itch, even head ache. Funnily enough I burn a lot of natural incenses and enjoy the gentle smokiness it gives the room - go figure?

I fear an over scented future

Same. I can't smell the cats myself though (and I'm always rubbing my face in their fur), though other people have said they could tell I had cats when they came into the house.

But yes. I don't know why everything has to have a scent. Many synthetic scents give me a headache.

most men's colognes as well as most women's parfumes, stink to high heaven- but given a choice between that or just plain raw funk, i'd choose the former every time. and fabric softener is a happy smell :)

You're absolutely right. It's quantity over quality and these days guess who wins every time? It drives me nuts because it became so hard to find unscented detergent and other products. It's the cheap artificial stench passing as "apple" or "wild flowers" that drives me nuts.

Agreed! A good quality essential oil smells delightful. Most cleaning and antibacterial products are starting to smell very similar; annoying, irritating to my sinuses, and sometimes downright nauseating.

Often these products bear not even a passing resemblance to any fruit I've ever smelled.
