I'm a little "on edge" today...

Yesterday, my next-door neighbor's house was burglarized and had a television set, along with a number of other valuables, stolen.

Today, I'll be home by myself (and my two dogs and a cat) until about four in the afternoon, and I have a lingering fear that the burglars might return to the neighborhood and break into my house. I keep trying to reassure myself that, logically, since the burglars already stole a number of valuables from the other house, and since neighborhood alertness might be amped up since their last burglary, that the burglars won't have any reason to attempt another burglary, but I can't help but feel very anxious about it.

I hope that it doesn't happen to you, as well. The same thing happened to my neighbour's house when I was still living with my parents. I was afraid that the burglars would come back and invade our house. I checked the front door three times before going to bed, for a month.

I had some (black) guys during the night trying to break into my vehicle. I was in Texas at the time (for about a year). The officer actually told me that if someone is trying to break into your vehicle at night - beat him with a baseball bat until he can't move and then call us (his exact words). Not to mention Texas has excellent no trespassing laws...

But, from what I've known of thieves they might come back the next day - just to throw people off (if its the same place). But more often then not they sit around and watch a house for days, and days... weeks, or months. Until they are confident enough to go break into it and steal stuff. You being home - with 4 cats, next to a neighbor that was just victimized makes me think that you should be pretty safe.

Strangely enough it seems the way to stay safe is to put away valuables if you have anyone coming over (cable installer, people you don't know, etc). We actually know of someone who lost a son because the cable tv installer came back a year after to steal the dads gun collection (the dad had probably showed the cable installer) - but the son happened to be home sick from school because he was sick that day. These things do happen, but most thieves are going after EASY, and items they want. Usually they'll leave you alone if you don't seem to have anything of value.

It's probably not likely, but nobody can blame you for being on edge.
We were burgled three years ago, but they didn't take much. I actually woke up briefly that morning at about 2:10am and felt that something was amiss, but didn't get out of bed.

I would suggest getting an alarm system. It might help you feel a little more secure. People can still break in but you would hear a noise & it could scare em off

I grew up on a rough estate and my dad always drilled into me that you should never steal from your own. I'd love to say that's the case for most people but it wouldn't surprise me if the person that did it turns out to be local, something stupid like a person in your own street . The fact that they were comfortable enough to break into a house next door to you says to me that you shouldnt be too surprised if they turn up again. Be careful.
